SRK takes Yash Raj to Ladakh

Posted On Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 02:36:41 AM

Mirror told you in May that Yash Chopra was toying with the idea of revisiting one of his favourite destinations, the Kashmir valley, as a backdrop for his directorial next starring Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif.

The last time the snow-dusted valley featured in Chopra's films was in the 1976 blockbuster Kabhie Kabhie, after which the filmmaker, known for his choice of the most beautiful locales, had shifted his attention to the Swiss Alps for the longest time. So much so, the production house even conducted a recce of Kashmir, raising anticipation levels there.

However, Mirror now has it that the climax of Yash Chopra's yet-untitled film will be shot in Ladakh and not Kashmir, only because Shah Rukh suggested the venue.

A source close to the film had said, "Yashji loves the snow in Kashmir and has shot two of his most romantic films, Daag and Kabhi Kabhie, there. They need a snow-capped landscape for the climax. Hence, initially, he contemplated shooting in Kashmir."

However, Shah Rukh came up with the idea of Ladakh, where he had shot for Mani Rathnam's Dil Se, and still has fond memories of the place, the source revealed.

That's when and how the plan changed. So this winter, the film's unit will head for a ten-day climax shoot to Ladakh instead of Kashmir.

Yash Raj Films' official spokesperson confirmed the news saying, "The next schedule is in Ladakh."

SRK edges Devgn out of theatres

The production house has asked distributors to give Yash Chopra's Diwali release more importance, leaving the other film Son Of Sardar in trouble

Posted On Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 02:18:31 AM

This Diwali, Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan will lock horns at the box office. Thanks to the makers of Son Of Sardar and Yash Chopra's directorial venture who scheduled the release of their films on November 14. And though it is still a few months before the firecrackers go off, Mirror has learnt that the war has already begun.

In fact, if sources are to be believed, Khan has already won half the battle. The latest buzz in the trade is that distributors were told to book the same number of screens for Yash Chopra's film as for Salman Khan's Ek Tha Tiger. In simple words, more than half the theatres will be playing SRK's film, leaving Devgn little room at the ticket window.

Akshaye Rathi a fourth generation exhibitor and distributor tweeted, "Yashji's film has already been signed for all the cinemas across India which is playing Ek Tha Tiger. That takes away the best ones!"

A source from a leading theatre in the city agreed, "When there are stars like SRK and Ajay involved, that too when it's a Diwali release, it becomes a tough call for us. When we are asked to give one film as many shows as Salman's solo release, we are in a fix. Because here we have two big stars and two big films to showcase. However, SRK and Yashji's film will take more shows both in multiplexes and single screen theatres."

Another multiplex chain head told us, "Firstly, being a SRK-Yashji combo, one can safely assume maximum shows will go to that film. It will approximately be a 70:30 ratio. And it is a practice that is followed by few producers when they have big releases back to back."

Trade expert Taran Adarsh said, "When big films release on the same date, there is always a battle to get the maximum space. But at the same time, two films can easily co-exist. However, if producers have already had a word with distributors in terms of blocking slots in advance, things may be different. Here, if Yashji's film gets as many shows as Ek Tha Tiger - a solo Eid release, then be it in India or overseas, Ajay's film even as big as this one, will have to fight a harder battle.”

When contacted, YRF's spokesperson said, "YRF has been dealing with the same theatre owners through our distribution offices over the last 40 years and all of them would be more than happy to screen a Yash Chopra film, coming after a gap of eight years, without any reservation."

Devgn, however, remained unavailable for comment.

No more freebies, stars to pay for their own staff

Posted On Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at 03:24:17 AM

Ever since the imposition of 12.36 per cent service tax on actors, producers have been a worried lot. And justifiably so since they think the additional tax will eventually be passed off to them.

However, here's some cause for cheer as Mirror has learnt industry actors and actresses will now bear the entire expense of their staff from their own pockets. And, it didn't happen overnight. It was the producers who collectively met the actors several times, making them see reason.

Many long discussions and arguments later, the actors have now decided to tow the producers' line and pay their staff including hairdressers, makeup artistes, bodyguards and others daily expenses.

VP of the Film and TV Producers Guild, Mukesh Bhatt, confirmed the development and said, "Service tax is already killing the producers and the staff of some of the actors were asking for an exhorbitant amount. Some drivers and spot boys were demanding Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 a day. Make up artistes and hair dressers were asking for Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 a day.”

He added, "The actors have now been told that the amount they pay to the staff will be included in their remuneration and no overheads will be paid to their staff.”

Some of the actors who have agreed are SRK, Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor and Salman Khan. Others like Saif - Kareena and Deepika are yet to sign the papers.

Aamir even wrote back to Mukesh saying, "I agree with you that the personal staff of filmstars like drivers and spotboys should not be charging unreasonable amounts to producers.”

The new protocol has been effective July 7 onward.

SRK-Rohit film sold for for 105 crore
TNN | Aug 4, 2012, 12.00AM IST

The trade buzz is that Shah Rukh Khan and Rohit Shetty's Chennai Express has been sold for `105 crore.

This news is no surprise to industry watchers as Rohit's last outing at the theatres, Bol Bachchan also fetched a fab price. His teaming up with the Bollywood Badshah is definitely something the trade and the janta is excited about.

We asked the film's co-producer Siddharth Roy Kapur for a confirmation. However he refused to comment. A reliable trade source told us, "Shah Rukh and a film corporation are partnering on this one. Chances are that they will only sell the satellite, home video and music rights and actually keep the overseas and Indian theatrical rights with themselves."

How then is this `105 crore figure being talked about? "As in all industry deals, there are heels within wheels," says our source. "The exact nature of the transaction will be out sooner or later."

Shahrukh in 'Krrish 3'!

IndiaGlitz [Saturday, August 04, 2012]

Yeah, you read it right! The birdies in town are excited about this latest buzz from the sets of Hrithik Roshan starrer 'Krrish 3'!

Sources are to be believed that the Badshah of B-town Shahrukh Khan will share a small screen space with the dancing superstar and the film's superhero Hrithik Roshan.

The King Khan is expected to do a cameo in the film's climactic scenes, which sources reveal, might be coming together of Krrish and Ra.One...! Well, you never know what's gonna happen!! Anyway, it's not yet clear how and when SRK will appear in 'Krrish 3'.

Incidentally, Hrithik had made a special appearance in SRK's 'Don 2' and going by their close friendship, Shahrukh said to be paying back the gesture by being part of Roshan's ambitious project.

While things are yet to be finalised on this front, the shooting of King Khan's scenes will be done, once he confirms his dates.

Aryan and Suhana to bid good bye to SRK and Gauri

Last Updated: Saturday, August 04, 2012, 20:03

New Delhi: When papa Shah Rukh Khan was such a devoted student during his college days, then how can he let his kids stay behind in the race to excel in life? Well, it has been reported by a source from Dhirubhai Ambani International School that SRK’s son Aryan, 15, is gearing up for his higher studies at Sevenoaks School in London. The prestigious school is located at a prime location near Central London and rumours are rife that even SRK’s daughter Suhana, 12, might get enrolled into the same school in near future.

A secret source says, “Aryan’s now nearing his college years. Shah Rukh wants to take the media glare away from his life and have him focus on his education. He also wants Aryan to have an identity of his own. Once he finishes his (current) semester here, he will go to London.”

The source adds, “SRK and his family frequently visit London as it’s one of their favourite holiday destinations, so the Khans will be around to spend time with him. Also, there, Aryan will have more liberty to choose what he wants to study and pursue a career of his choice.”

Here is wishing Aryan a good time studying abroad and we hope that like his doting father, he too, makes the most of the available opportunities in the foreign land.

Shahrukh Khan doesn’t understand chemistry, really?

BollywoodLife2.13 PM IST 08.08.2012

We know how ishhmart the baadshah of Bollywood can get with his words. Here’s what Shahrukh Khan has to say about the one particular word that actors regularly face in media queries-chemistry!

SRK on the chemistry between him and Kajol:

“I think chemistry is too deep a word…only media people use it. Kajol and I have had this long debate on ‘what is chemistry’..I ‘m sure you wouldn’t know what is the chemical name for CH3COOH, but you (the media) still love to say ‘chemistry.’

SRK on Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif’s chemistry:

“They (Kat and Sallu) have done many films together. So I don’t know about the chemistry but it looks like a wonderful pair. I wish them all the luck,”

Shahrukh Khan takes a dig at Priyanka Chopra on Twitter!

Latika Payak5.50 PM IST 08.10.2012

And it surely looks like no love is lost between the Don and his wild cat

We just love spotting ex-good friends taking digs at each other. And to our utter delight we spotted Shahrukh Khan slyly commenting on his once-upon-a-time friend Priyanka Chopra’s tweet! Curious to know what happened? Here’s what.

Piggy Chops, who loves to share the tiniest updates of her life with us on her microblogging site, tweeted, “Quick q n a.. Let’s go..”. Such a mundane tweet one would think, right? Not quite. At least not for the Baadshah of B-town who tweeted, “So many people send me so many notices. Isn’t this whole exercise losing its ‘Appeal’…pun intended.”

But he soon realised that it was very vague and none might notice the ‘link’. So he followed it up with: “quick questions…only funny answers…so please beware and don’t get offended. Ask me of my favourite colour and i will sue u !!” Ahem ahem. And that’s when our ‘dig-alert’ started ringing.

C’mon SRK, now what’s wrong with giving funny answers to quick questions, eh? And if Pee Cee likes sharing the li’l details with her fans, what’s the harm? Are you, by any chance, feeling possessive of your jungli billi accompanying the B-town hunk, Hrithik Roshan (Krrish 3), in his world-saving endeavours? We seriously can’t help wondering about it!

SRK plays action hero in Kashmir’s ‘strong arms’

For Yash Chopra’s upcoming film, the actor hangs from a bridge and shoots midair, but takes a break from the hectic schedule to meet son before he leaves for London

Posted On Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at 04:49:31 AM

After a grueling eight-day-schedule in Ladakh, Shah Rukh Khan arrived at the Srinagar International Airport on Monday. "My father's one unfulfilled wish was to bring me to Kashmir cos his mom was from here. Now I am here, it feels I am in his big strong arms," tweeted the actor.

Within minutes of his arrival, he boarded a private chopper to avoid the wet roads and reached the hill resort in Pahalgam, south Kashmir. The crew of the film - including Anushka Sharma, Katrina Kaif and director Yash Chopra were waiting for him. On Tuesday, a difficult bridge blowing scene was planned. Sources from the valley told us how the unit planned to blast a bridge in Pahalgam.

Meanwhile back at the actor's mansion in Mumbai, his son Aryan was busy packing his bags to leave for London - mommy Gauri in tow. And if sources are to be believed, papa Khan did not let his son go off without meeting him.

In the midst of the adrenaline pumping action sequences planned in the valley, and driving through the cold deserts of Ladakh, Shah Rukh, say sources, took a break. He flew down to Mumbai to see his son off to his school, Sevenoaks in Kent.

In fact, the actor (perhaps on his way back from Mumbai) had tweeted, "Dark clouds, wet roads, too early for even life to feel alive but I am on my way to make movies."

But while Gauri was spotted leaving with son Aryan for London, daddy had to rush back to the sets in Kashmir - to shoot in midair as we can now see.

The doting daddy however, had visited his son's future school earlier. On June 14, Shah Rukh visited the institution, which is said to be one of the finest educational hubs for youngsters aged 11-18 years. And on August 4, Aryan's admission was finally done.

On Monday, August 27, Aryan was thus off to a new phase of his life. Far from the media glare his parents decided to keep him away from, Aryan flew off with mum. Close friends came to bid him a happy journey. Here's wishing Aryan a wonderful life ahead.

Shahrukh Khan’s 10 silly tips for Teachers’ Day!

Reza Noorani2.33 PM IST 09.05.2012

Shahrukh decided to play teacher and gave out some outrageous tips on Twitter

Looks like Shahrukh Khan took our feature on Teachers’ Day quite seriously, and decided to out-trump us by giving his own silly tips on the occasion! Or perhaps screen life got to him – with him playing a teacher in Mohabbatein, Chak De! India and other films – so that in a wacked-out frame of mind he decided to share some equally hilarious thoughts to celebrate the occasion!

1. “The fewer the facts u have… the stronger will be ur opinion.
2. “The only person who can get all his work done by Friday is Robinson Crusoe…the rest cant so don’t be hard on urself. Enjoy the weekend”
3. “Women do come with instructions… all u need to do is ask them and more importantly HEAR them.”
4. “Gırls, men who use Emoticons in their msgs r extremely ‘cute’ and extremely avoıdable…they r EMOtıonally CONfuse”
5. “Once in a while look up at the sky and say a thanx for the moon…the sun…the stars and the satellites…for the connectivity”
6. “Its advisable to pick ur friends…ur profession…ur choices…but just don’t pick ur nose…ever”
7. “At ur daughters dance show, u will miss half her performance cos u wıll mıstake sum other lıl girl onstage for ur daughter & look at her”
8. “Becos u only see ‘beware of dog’ signs & never a ‘Nice Dog’ sign outside rich ppls houses…does not mean dogs r not nice. They are.”
9. “As soon we attract enuff attention in the world to play a part in it, we r set rolling like a ball which will never again be at rest.”
10. “Make 5 pıeces of work (fılms ın my case) u wıll be remembered for…and learn one song to play on the guıtar.”

The nuttiest words SRK ever spoke! Which one is your favourite?

The scene stealer

The scene stealer At 80, Yash Chopra announces his retirement and goes down the memory lane with SRK

Posted On Friday, September 28, 2012 at 09:12:45 AM

It was an event hosted by the company he has ably helmed for decades to felicitate him on his 80th birthday but it ended with Yash Chopra making a surprise announcement about his retirement. The Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jab Tak Hain Jaan will be Chopra’s last film as director.

With this one masterstroke YRF threw the gauntlet to the makers of Son of Sardar who have dared to open at the same time as them. Saying that he now wants to move into the mentor mode, Yash Chopra told Shah Rukh Khan, with whom he was in conversation: “Like they say, the best things we eat at the end. I want to do other things now. Launch new people. My wife has been complaining, so I will make her happy.”

A dapper Shah Rukh, whose first brush with a Yash Chopra film - Joshila, took place at the tender age of nine (“My mom told me she will show me a film if I passed in Hindi”), spoke about the filmmaker’s journey - from being an engineering aspirant to the father of romance in Hindi cinema.

SRK who may occasionally report late on the sets arrived much earlier than the scheduled time to rehearse for the event. After making a grand entry reciting the now famous verses from his upcoming film, he later sang ‘Happy Birthday’ for Chopra Sr. And it was one of those rare occasions when he spoke less than the other person on stage. Clearly, the director was the star at this one.

The octogenarian was in a reflective mood as he spoke at length about his life’s journey which began, as he said, in 1951, when to fulfill his family’s dream of him becoming an engineer, Chopra came to Bombay. “They sent me here to get my passport made so that I could go to England and study engineering.” But like his elder brother, BR Chopra, his heart too was set on filmmaking. “Bhaisaab told me not to assist him but I persisted. Mom always used to tell me ‘apne dil ki suno’. Finally she gave me Rs 200 and said ‘yeh lo mera aashirwad’,” he recalled.

And thus, with a scene that could have been handpicked from one of his films, began Yash Chopra’s journey in Bollywood. From being ‘poetry friends’ with Meena Kumari, to getting his first directorial project and the first multi-starrer Waqt, he never lost focus.

The next big milestone in his road to success came along in 1971, when moving away from his brother, he started his own production house, Yash Raj Films. “I never cared about money. But when my wife was pregnant, I realised I couldn’t manage. I gathered the guts to tell bhaisaab I wanted to make my own films. He told me that from now I was on my own.”

About his host for the evening, Chopra Sr mentioned that ever since they worked on Darr, he has never looked for any other hero. “Shah Rukh never asks me about the script. Or the fee.” To this, his hero replied: “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” Incidentally, Shah Rukh has still not been paid for the film all set to release this Diwali.

Shah Rukh asked Chopra what many haven’t been able to: How he convinced Jaya Bachchan and Rekha to share screen space in Silsila.

“I told Amitabh (Bachchan) that I wanted Jaya and Rekha in the film. (At the time they were shooting Kaalia in Kashmir) He paused for a moment and then said, ‘Bombay jaake you meet them.’ On our return flight, we didn’t talk to each other,” recalled Chopra Sr. “Before I started the film, dono ko maine alag alag bola, for obvious reasons, that please gadbad mat karna.

They assured me nothing would happen. I have realised if you are honest with the stars and your script, nothing can go wrong,” he added. And that’s a formula along with chiffons and Switzerland, he has stuck by.

Yash Chopra taunts SRK, says Big B was always punctual
Esha Razdan | Sep 28, 2012, 10:15AM IST

Shah Rukh Khan may be Yash Chopra’s all-time favourite actor. No wonder, the ace filmmaker chose the reigning superstar as the leading man of his last film as director. But, Mr. Chopra isn’t pleased with one habit of SRK and as a father figure, finds comfort in showing his displeasure.

In a conversation with Shah Rukh on his birthday recently, Chopra went down the memory lane and spoke of the days when he directed young Amitabh Bachchan in Deewar and Kabhi Kabhi where he pointed out a good habit of Bachchan.

“Amitabh has always been a terrific actor, but the best quality of his which I can’t withhold raving about is punctuality,” exclaimed Yash while giving a look to SRK and also, pointing out fingers at him.

Shah Rukh, who was slightly taken aback at the same, immediately reacted by saying, “I know you admire Big B for punctuality, but why are you pointing out fingers at me (chuckled).”

Well, Mr. Chopra, SRK isn’t the only culprit; his arch-rival Salman Khan too sails in the same boat. Remember, how troublesome he turned for you and director Kabir Khan while shooting for Ek Tha Tiger. But, we are sure, SRK means a lot to you, that’s why, a concern. Isn’t it Mr. Chopra?

KJo to direct SRK once again

Posted On Friday, October 12, 2012 at 03:52:14 AM

After the 2010 film My Name is Khan, they haven’t come together as director and actor. But that’s about to change now. Mirror has it that Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan are gearing up for a most unexpected collaboration.

We had earlier reported that four prominent directors: Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap and Dibakar Banerjee will be joining hands to make a feature film titled Bombay Talkies that commemorates completion of 100 years of Indian cinema.

It is learnt that KJo’s directorial, which will be 20 to 25 minute in duration and is a part of Bombay Talkies, will star Shah Rukh in the lead while Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor will lend their presence to Zoya’s film. And while Anurag and Dibakar are yet to finalise their films’ cast, rumour is that Imran Khan will be part of Dibakar’s movie.

Bombay Talkies will have all four directors doing a fictional take on how they perceive the genesis and reach of cinema. Given the unique style of each of the four directors, it will be interesting to see their individual movies. These will then come together as one feature film that will most likely release in May 2013.

SRK to be a trademark

Posted On Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 02:25:09 AM

Shah Rukh Khan is a brand by himself. And very soon his often-used initials - SRK may become a very valuable property.

Mirror found out that the actor has recently applied for a trademark on his name SRK at the Delhi office of the Trade Mark Registry.

However, he has not received a final confirmation on it yet. According to the rules, once his trademark SRK is published in the Indian Trademark Journal, anybody who has an objection can file a notice within three months.

Interestingly, Sachin Tendulkar had applied for the same, to trademark his name SRT, earlier this year. In fact, we had told you how when Vidhu Vinod Chopra needed to use the cricketer’s name in his film Ferrarri Ki Sawaari, he had to seek Sachin’s permission.

In the West, getting a trademark on one’s name isn’t uncommon. In fact, Roger Federer, Michael Gordon and Jennifer Lopez are among some of the names that have been trademarked in the past.

And now, SRK is ready to add his name to the list. A source close to the actor told Mirror, “SRK has become bigger with every project. He has taken this decision after a lot of thought.

Career wise, it is a great decision to safeguard his brand.”

Interestingly, the application submitted by the actor to the Trade Mark Registry (of which, Mirror has a copy) bars several industries from using his name. For example, tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, water and even other non-alcoholic drinks can’t use the actor’s name.

The same goes for fresh fruits, vegetables, salt, mustard so on and so forth.

What is a Trademark?

» A "trademark" is that symbol you will use to do so. Registering a trademark is a legal process provided for under the Trade Marks Act, 1999

» Types of trademarks available

» Names, including your own name or surname.

» An invented word or any arbitrary dictionary word or words. It does not need to be descriptive of the character or quality of the goods/service.

» Letters or numerals or any combination.

» Symbols

» Monograms

» Combination of colours or even a single colour in combination with a word or device.

» Shape of goods or their packaging.

» Marks constituting a 3-dimensional sign.

» Sound marks when represented in conventional notation or described in words by being graphically represented.

Salman Khan mocked rival SRK’s insecurity?
Dailybhaskar.com | Oct 29, 2012, 10:01AM IST

Rivals Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan have been making headlines for their repestive interest and disinterest in releasing their filcks on Eid-ul-Fitr next year.

For the uninitiated, King Khan was initially planning to release “Chennai Express” on Eid 2013. But Salman, whose project “Sher Khan”, an original Eid 2013 release, was set on the back burner, wasn’t ready to take it lying down.
