"Jab Tak Hai Jaan" (Пока я живу) - последний фильм, сделанный легендарным болливудским режиссером Яш Чопрой, который умер в прошлом месяце. 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' premiere: Bollywood celebrates Yash Chopra's legacy Bollywood, Posted on Nov 13, 2012 at 10:36am IST
Mumbai: The best of Bollywood came to celebrate the legendary legacy of filmmaker Yash Chopra at the premiere of his film 'Jab Tak hai Jaan' Monday at Yash Raj Films studios.
The cast of the film, Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma greeted the guests along with Yash Chopra's son Uday Chopra and wife Pamela.
"We are missing him every moment. I hope everyone enjoys the film. His legacy has been wonderfully celebrated," Shah Rukh said. Memories of the late filmmaker filled the red carpet with posters from his pictures placed along the carpet.
Guests included the cream of the industry like Amitabh Bachchan with wife Jaya Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Aamir Khan with wife, Karan Johar, Imran Khan, Hritik Roshan, Randhir Kapoor, Rajiv Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor.
"This is a celebration of Yash Chopra's life. He is still alive for me through his films, work, music. I am really looking forward to his film," Anil Kapoor said.
"He was the king of romance. This is a beautiful way to celebrate his life with love, happiness and remembrance. His films show romance for every age. Wish he was around to see this," actor Madhuri Dixit said.
Sridevi, who had been the leading lady for Yash Chopra's 'Chandni' said: "There are so many memories with him that it is endless of say. It is difficult to express. We will miss him."
Along with Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, other veteran actors included Vinod Khanna, Dilip Kumar, Saira Banu and Jeetendra. "We are excited to see the film. We thank the family for this premiere. Yash ji would have liked this," Amitabh Bachchan said.

Filmfare – 4 stars But JTHJ is so much more than its flawless visual appeal. AR Rahman’s music and background score adds a touch of magic to the proceedings. It complements the actors’ performances perfectly. Shah Rukh Khan makes a stunning entry, he owns the screen space and he weaves his charisma into a net that holds JTHJ together. Especially effective are his scenes as the reserved army officer. Katrina Kaif is just a thing of beauty. That she looks stunning is a given, but she manages to give one of her career’s finest performances as Meera. Her underplay is the perfect contrast to Anushka’s lively and bubbly act. Anushka lightens JTHJ with energy, while Katrina anchors it with firm emotions.
Ananya Bhattacharya – 4 Stars AR Rahman’s music in the film somewhere seems underused. The songs ‘Challa’, ‘Ishq Shava’ and ‘Saans Mein’ are a delight to the ears. The Master Musician’s ‘Heer’ is a beautiful song. The numbers are hummable, and nice ones; but just that. They aren’t exactly exceptional. We’ve had better specimens from Rahman in the past, and will sure have better ones in the future. You can thank the Kings of Romance once you’re done with the film… nahi bhoolenge hum, jab tak hai jaan!
Saibal Chatterjee – 3.5 Stars Shahrukh oozes charm and chutzpah and ensures the character remains in the realms of believability. Katrina plays the grounded Meera with assurance. In the moments when she is egged on by Samar to let her hair down – especially in the sequence with the underground dancers – the actress lets herself go and makes an impression. But it is to Anushka Sharma that Jab Tak Hai Jaan really belongs. Turning in an infectiously energetic performance, she breathes life into the somewhat flaccid second half.
Taran Adarsh – 4 Stars In view of the fact that a major portion of the story focuses on SRK and Katrina, one might assume that Anushka's role is more of a supporting one, but that's entirely fallacious. She's an integral part of this story and it must be said that she walks away with some of the best scenes and lines in the movie. Her performance is full of grit. On the whole, JAB TAK HAI JAAN resonates an oft-repeated fact: Love stories will come and go. But no one will make them like Yash Chopra. Just don't miss this heartwarming love story!
Sukanya Verma – 2.5 Stars While I personally preferred his rugged in uniform appearance and wounded recluse act better than the somewhat jaded lover boy strumming a guitar, he rises above the superficial in the most ordinary moments with his searching eyes that have clearly seen a lot and is coming to terms with a life gone by. Although a Yash Chopra heroine is always a much-anticipated treat, Katrina is let down by a feebly written role and unimaginative, routine styling. Anushka definitely scores better. Ultimately Jab Tak Hai Jaan is nothing more than lovely fluff that could have been shorter, snappier but is definitely worth watching once for the man whose name appears against the bright blue sky Mr Yash Chopra.
Raja Sen – 3 Stars And yet it's not her film. Or even Yash Chopra's, really. Jab Tak Hai Jaan is all Shah Rukh, all the time. His character seems larger than the film, and Khan himself is in fine form even when the script deserves far less. There are times he seems out of place, certainly, but these are made up for by times where he grounds the narrative with one glare, with one scowl, with one kiss. The dude abides. As a swan-song for the master director, Jab Tak Hai Jaan might only be a middling effort. But then, sometimes, all we need is a Khan-song.
Joginder Tuteja – 3 Stars You expect nothing but an extraordinary outing when so many talented names come together for the film 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan'. However somewhere in the corner of the heart you are also a little apprehensive if abundance of talent and present of best in the best from the business turns out to be a little too overwhelming from the film's making perspective. Eventually though, 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' turns out to be a one time affair that can be seen but without any expectations of a would-be classic unfolding on screen.
Anupama Chopra – 3 Stars You also have to admire Shah Rukh's ability to play the romantic hero. We've seen him do it for two decades but he still makes it compelling. Jab Tak Hai Jaan is too tangled to transport you. At almost 180 minutes, it also requires enormous patience. But I recommend that you see it. Because only Yash Chopra could make heartache so attractive and ennobling that his characters wear it like a badge of honor.

The late Yash Chopra is known for grandeur and an eye for detail. His last outing behind the camera is lavish on both counts. The splendor of Ladakh and London is captured beautifully - the detailing of scenes is impeccable. The late director infuses romance into every situation; capturing the mood of even the flowers in the vases! Every scene has a connotation to the ones preceding or the ones gone by. Only the length is a bit tiring as he labours to bring the love story to its ultimate end.
However, Yashji had a brilliant opportunity to stun the audience in the last scene as Major Samar (Shah Rukh Khan) goes about diffusing his last bomb. A change in the fate of this situation would, to my mind, have catapulted this film from a simple love story to an unforgettable one.
Major Samar heads the Bomb Diffusing Squad in the Indian Army. He has diffused 98 bombs so far, all without a protective gear. We soon learn that there is a method to this madness of his. At every turn, he is embracing death, challenging the one above, because the love of his life Meera (Katrina Kaif) has decided to stay away from him so that he lives a long life.
The story begins with Samar diffusing one such bomb and then rushing into the cold waters of Leh to save another! This one is Akira (Anushka Sharma). Without so much as a backward glance, Samar moves off on his bike after rescuing Akira and putting on his jacket on her. Akira chances upon his personal diary in which Samar has penned his love story.
JAB TAK HAI JAAN then moves to London where Samar is making ends meet juggling between three jobs. He runs into Meera when he is cleaning the front of a Church.
The establishing of Samar and Meera and the blossoming of their love story is quick and to the point. The late director does not waste time in getting Samar make his feelings known to Meera and Meera recipocrating.
But here is when the twist in the tale appears. Meera is all set to break off her engagement to her childhood friend, when things go wrong for them.
Samar is forced to return to India. In retaliation, he joins the Indian Army and embraces death at every given opportunity.
Akira, a student learning the ropes of television journalism, who he had saved, gets to spend two weeks with his camp and here is when she does a Samar on him. Meaning: she expresses her love for him just as Samar had done with Meera at a London station - at a time least expected. But for Samar, there cannot be another Meera.
Akira's documentary on Samar gets her a ticket to Discovery Channel, but for that she has to get Samar to London. He agrees after first refusing. Once in London, things go wrong for Samar again.
Meera's help has to be sought as Akira goes in search of her. It's 10 years now since he last met Meera. What would the situation be like?
The styling of the film is super. No efforts are lacking in making it look and feel grand. The Music By A R Rahman, though not ranking among his best, does get you grooving. The choreography is splendid, especially the dance track where Meera lets her hair down with Samar. Awesome.
Shah Rukh Khan is back to his basic form - that of a lover boy. He essays his character effortlessly; carrying the weight of someone who can be dumped with bravado and then brooding over his lost love with aplomb. He balances the shift in roles with ease and even handles the advances of an enthusiastic and optimistic Akira with maturity.
Katrina Kaif is fabulous. Her transformation from a rich girl trapped in a fancy world who gets to let her hair down is fantastic. She carries off the farce while exposing who she really is on the inside is very emotional.
Yash Chopra had mentioned that this would be the last film he would direct. He has left a lasting impression with this one.
Will it be curtains now for grand romances? Only time will tell.
But for now, relish JAB TAK HAI JAAN!
PS: There is one huge flaw in the script that sends the film nose-diving. Akira making a mention of Meera to Samar in the most serious of situations. This, too, when their relationship has not yet been established. To the director's credit, he quickly submerges the flaw. But still, it does stick out like a sore thumb.
Anushka Sharma's character too is forced. Probably, if her character was done away with, the film would have been crisper.
