| Saif Ali Khan: Learning to act!

From Main Khiladi Tu Anari to Omkara, it has been an educational ride through the crowded bylanes of Bollywood for the Nawab of Pataudi. And as the Cocktail star celebrates his 42nd birthday we look at defining roles of the versatile actor’s 20-year-long career in Bollywood
The first memories of Saif Ali Khan – born in Bhopal and brought up in the UK – as an actor was that of a long-haired, cherubic-looking, male version of Sharmila Tagore with a goofy smile, a silly sense of humour and an uber cool fashion sense. Remember films like Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Yeh Dillagi, Tu Chor Main Sipahi, Hum Saath Saath Hain, et al?
And the UK-returned son of the 60s A-list leading lady bumbled around in the initial years of his filmi career – his first film was Parampara – doing humdrum stories packed with melodramatic characters. While the disconcerting disconnect between the real Nawab and his reel roles was apparent, Saif always had a project on hand to keep him busy and the home fires burning.
So neither his fans nor the critics expected anything meaty (read: powerful roles) of the dapper dude called Saif. But came the new millennium, and he shocked, stunned and surprised everyone with his striking performance in the cult-film Dil Chahta Hai.
While Farhan Akhtar’s creation called Sameer (name of Saif’s character in DCH) was still as silly and playful as the star’s earlier roles, the part seemed extremely close to the UK-returned actor’s real life persona. The upper middle-class mindset, the wicked sense of humour and the light-hearted attitude of Sameer worked wonders for Saif’s career as an actor.
Slowly everyone’s perception of and expectations from Sharmila Tagore’s son started altering. Fortunately, he followed it up with Karan Johar and Nikhil Advani’s Kal Ho Naa Ho, again a role with foreign roots, close to the real Saif, adding a new feather to his fancy hat. We don’t know if it was the appreciation for the decent performances that awakened Saif’s acting bug, or the scripts targeting the NRI market that finally connected the actor to his audience. Whatever it may have been, it was starting to work imn his favour.
The big real turning point in Saif’s career came with dark unconventional roles in Sriram Raghavan’s Ek Hasina Thi, Homi Adajania’s Being Cyrus and Vishal Bhardwaj’s Omkara. The killer hidden behind the façade of a suave lover, an eccentric Parsi artist and a treacherous Langda Tyagi proved that the Nawab of Pataudi had the acting chops to match steps with contemporaries like Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, etc.
But just when we had started enjoying watch the real Saif make magic with his zany sense of humour and out-of-the-box approach, the star actor seems to have gone back to doing far-fetched roles (the ludicrous spy in Agent Vinod and a romantic lover in films like Love Aaj Kal and Cocktail) and giving us nightmares very like those he induced in his earlier days in B-town. Turkeys like Tashan and Kurbaan – though his role in that one was dark and committed – have not helped redeem his reputation.
On this birthday (August 16) we’d like to remind the Khan superstar that it’s time to throw caution to the wind and thrust the envelope out of the window. And get back to some real acting!

| It’s a court wedding for Saifeena
On Sep 12 Saif filed an application for marriage at the Bandra marriage registrar’s office. He can get married to Kareena in the next 30 days

For months, they played the media and their fans - keeping all of us guessing about their wedding plans. And much as Saif and Kareena would like the world to believe that a “wedding is just a formality” and that they are “as good as being married” the truth is, Saif is playing it safe after all. He has decided to take the legal recourse to solemnize their nuptials and put an end to all speculations about his relationship with his companion of five years.
On September 12, Saif visited the Bandra marriage registrar’s office. According to sources there, the actor submitted all the necessary details and filed an application for marriage.
The law says the couple may get married on any date post completion of 30 days from Sep 12, which means any day between Oct 11 and Oct 17, as Sharmila Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s has invited friends and well wishers for the Dawat-e-Walima on October 18, which according to tradition is the day-after dinner hosted in honour of a wedded couple.
There have been reports that Saif and Kareena are planning to call the registrar over to the actor’s Bandra home on October 16 at 5 pm to complete the formalities. However, sources at the Bandra court have told Mirror that they have not received any request from Saif for a home visit as yet.
It may be noted here that Saif is in London, where he has been attending fashion events and waiting for Kareena to join him, to usher in her birthday on September 21. Kareena in fact flew out last night.

| Darul Uloom labels Saif, Kareena marriage as anti-Islam

Leading Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband termed as "anti-Islam" the wedlock between film actors Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, saying the bride did not convert to Islam before the marriage.
The Islamic institution located in Deoband, a town in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, said,"Kareena did not convert to Islam before her marriage with Saif. Islam does not approve of such marriages."
"According to the Muslim laws, since Kapoor has not converted to Islam, this marriage is anti-Islam," said Habibur Rahman, a senior cleric of the seminary.
Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor tied the knot on October 16. The couple got their marriage registered in Mumbai.
Although there were rumours that a 'nikaah' was held, Kapoor's close friend and fashion designer Manish Malhotra had said that there was a simple exchange of vows between the two actors, who have been dating for five years.
Saif, 42, son of late Nawab of Pataudi and former Indian cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and actress Sharmila Tagore, sealed his relationship with Kareena, 32, at his residence in suburban Bandra through a registered marriage.

| Saifeena to go to Gstaad for their honeymoon

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor are expected to return to Mumbai by October 21 after the reception and ceremonies in New Delhi and Pataudi. As reported earlier in TOI Bebo will shoot her first item song post marriage with Salman Khan in Mumbai from October 22. After November 1 she will start promoting Talaash with Aamir Khan, while Saif will start shooting for Tigmanshu Dhulia's Bullet Raja in Madhya Pradesh.
The couple will fly to Gstaad, Switzerland in December for their annual vacation that will also double up as a honeymoon this time around. They will return to India by January 7, 2013 because Bebo starts shooting for Prakash Jha's Satyagraha on January 10 in Bhopal and Saif will promote Race-2 that releases on January 25, 2013.
The hotel in Gstaad where the couple spends their annual vacation is exclusively meant for royalty. In fact Saif is enrolled there as the Nawab of Pataudi. Even in the past years, Saifeena have been registering in the hotel as Mr and Mrs Khan. This time around, it will be no different.

| Saif’s Pataudi property reportedly valued at 750 cr

Sources indicate that Saif Ali Khan, the current Nawab of Pataudi, has a huge ancestral property in his name in Pataudi. It is said that the palace and some of the the other family properties collectivelly are reportedly valued around Rs 750 cr.
Our source says, "Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi has left the lion's share of his assets to his only son Saif. His daughters Saba and Soha are also reportedly mentioned in the will and are beneficiaries." In this context, Saif said, "I do not think the property is valued at as much as that. I don't really know the exact amount, but it sounds a bit high. It's ancestral property, so beyond value.'"
In the meantime, it's said post the Saifeena shaadi that happened last month, Pataudi's first family were likely to meet and resolve the property issues. Sharmila Tagore will represent her husband Mansoor Ali Khan.
Way back in 2003, Mansoor Ali Khan's two sisters, Saliha and Sabiha, had also staked their claim to the ancestral property in Pataudi. Matters have still not been resolved.

Saifeena win hands down for hosting the film industry’s best wedding party this year
The Nawab of Pataudi and his nayi naveli Begum gave us the shaadi of the year. The Saif Ali Khan-Kareena Kapoor wedding was chosen the best band, bajaa, baraat of B-town in 2012, with a whopping 43 percent votes! This comes as no surprise, as the extravagant celebrations were marked by the presence of the who’s who of Bollywood. But what does indeed amaze us is that the much anticipated Vidya Balan-Siddharth Roy Kapur marriage is nowhere in the race to the top. In fact, the Vid-Sid affair was at No.4, with just 10 percent votes! The low-key celebrations seem to have been too understated for the janta’s liking.
At No.2 was the much-in-love Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza, who personify coyness and mush. The couple got 31 percent votes, followed at a distant third by the high-profile South duo Ram Charan Teja and Upasana Kamineni at 11 percent.

| Goa govt to take action against Saif Ali Khan’s upcoming film

The Goa government today decided to take action against Saif Ali Khan-starrer 'Go, Goa Gone' for violating the Cigarette Smoking Act and for allegedly
'defaming' the coastal state in the movie, releasing tomorrow.
The violations were brought to the notice of the State Legislative Assembly by BJP Legislator Pramod Sawant, who claimed that the film defamed the
state.
"This is one of the instances wherein the filmmaker has been misusing Goa's name," Sawant said. The legislator also pointed out that the one of the posters showed Khan puffing cigarettes which violated the anti-tobacco law.
"NGO National Organization for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE) has already issued notice to the filmmakers (Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D K) and the actor," he said.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar responding to the Zero Hour mention by Sawant assured to take action on the matter. "Give me all the details, I will take
action," he said. The movie which is India's first Zom-com features Saif Ali
Khan, Kunal Khemu, Vir Das, Anand Tiwari and Puja Gupta.

| Are Go Goa Gone makers taking a dig at Rise of the Zombie?

We were in splits when we first watched the trailer of the Saif Ali Khan starrer Go Goa Gone and the audience too seemed to love it as the trailer went viral within a few days of its release. There is no doubt that this Krishna DK and Raj Nidimoru directed zombie flick has great potential.
However, India’s first zombie movie, Luke Kenny’s Rise of the Zombie didn’t quite hit the right note at the box office last weekend.
Go Goa Gone now has the chance to become the pioneers of this unexplored genre in Bollywood. And the latest promotional image that reached us from the marketing team of the film has some cheeky text on it – ‘killing zombies before they rise’. If you read between the lines, it seems like a reference to the debacle of the recent zombie flick, doesn’t it? Well, we don’t know if it was intended to be that way, but we like this tongue-in-cheek remark anyway!

| Saif Ali Khan flaunts his vocals in Goa!

The days were grueling, shooting in the remote locations of Goa. But the nights were just perfect for the star cast of ‘Go Goa Gone’ Kunal Khemu, Vir Das and Anand Tiwary as they had a gala time while working on their singing skills. And guess what, who took the initiative of mentoring them! It was none other than, the very talented Saif Ali Khan who would also, entertain them all night long.
As per the sources, watching the boys bond, it never occurred that they were working together for the first time. They got together like they had known each other forever. And the bonfire nights were the perfect platform for the three of them to come up with impromptu songs based on the happenings during the day.
During those late night parties where ‘Go Goa Gone’ crew had fun with the trio, Saif Ali Khan turned out to be a perfect entertainer who helped them improvise their off the cuffs songs and made sure that they have a blast.

Saif Ali Khan who has always been a voracious reader never left a chance on the sets of the film and always read books in his spare
time!
"Saif is an avid reader. He always had a book in his hand and read it during his free time. He also makes it a point to add new reads in his
collection," said a source from the production team. We heard that this is not
it! He even suggested a few books to the people on set!
"Saif encouraged a few people on set to read a certain kind of book and even recommended them with a few names," added the source.
From his romance to shooting skills to his spontaneous dancing groves, and now being a passionate reader, looks like this Bullett Raja does it
all!
A Tigmanshu Dhulia directorial, 'Bullett Raja', has been shot extensively in Lucknow and also stars Sonskshi Sinha and Jimmy Shergill in lead.
