Punjab’s a good omen for Akshay Kumar
Ankur Batra, TNN | Mar 15, 2012, 12.00AM IST

For his next film, " Special Chabbis" Akshay Kumar chose to shoot in Delhi and Punjab, and this isn't without reason.

While Delhi is special for the actor, because this is where he spent his days of struggle, it's the villages of Punjab where he shot films like " Singh is Kinng" and "Namaste London".

Says a source, "Akshay is always keen to shoot in Punjab as he considers it a good omen. All his movies which were shot in rural Punjab were hits."

After shooting in Chandni Chowk in Delhi, the "Special Chabbis" team headed to Chandigarh last Monday for shooting. A source from the unit said, "On the last day, the unit will head to Ludhiana where some shots are to be taken at the airport. Also, "SC" is not the only movie showing Akki's Punjab connection, as his next, "Khiladi 786-Made In Punjab", will also be shot in Punjab." Akshay recently completed his film "Joker" in Punjab, which will release by mid-2012.

Akki roots for Kat

Posted On Thursday, March 29, 2012 at 02:38:52 AM

She has perhaps been Akshay Kumar's most successful onscreen lover in recent times. And thus when AR Murugadoss finalised Akshay for his next Hindi project after Ghajini, the actor proposed the name of his favourite onscreen partner Katrina Kaif to the director. And now, Mirror has found out that Murugadoss has asked Kat to play the female lead in his upcoming project.

Currently Murugadoss is busy shooting the remaining portions of his Tamil venture titled Thupakki starring Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal.

“Katrina and Akshay have done six films together. They share a very good rapport and have a sizzling onscreen chemistry. Murugadoss was only too happy to take Akshay's suggestion about casting Kat in the female lead for his film,” said our source.

The only problem however, could be Katrina’s hike in remuneration. But according to our source, the actress who refused Rajinikanth’s Tamil venture due to the fee hike will be more flexible when it comes to monies for Akshay Kumar.

The film is scheduled to go on floors in November 2012.

Akki’s new BEST friends

The actor befriended a bus driver and a conductor while shooting for Neeraj Pande’s upcoming project

Posted On Sunday, April 08, 2012 at 09:05:09 PM

Walking down Horniman Circle, on Sunday afternoon, our lensman caught a tall, good looking, moustachioed man talking to a bus conductor. It took him a second look to realise that it was none other than Akshay Kumar. On a sultry summer day, the actor was happily chatting up with the BEST employee in fluent Marathi. And that was between the shots of his upcoming heist film Special Chhabees.

We took this opportunity to catch a glimpse of the candid Kumar on the sets of the Neeraj Pande directed film. Akki, sporting a blue check shirt, pleated khakis and a tan leather belt, looking dishy. The shot involved a big BEST bus. And needless to say, the bus driver and the conductor had to be a part of it.

Akshay, who plays the lead role in this film based on one of the most shocking con jobs in India that happened in 1987 at Zaveri Bazaar, spent no time in befriending his co-actors – bus driver Vasant Goghe and conductor Pandurang Shinde. His other co-star Manoj Bajpai had already finished his day’s work and left by then.

We spotted Akki talking to the two men in between the shots in rapid Marathi – asking them about their duty timings, life etc. It was an endearing moment. And a memorable one for the two BEST employees.

Twinkle Khanna pregnant again
Upala KBR, TNN | May 7, 2012, 12.00AM IST

Twinkle Khanna's second pregnancy has been confirmed. She is already in her second trimester and will deliver her baby in September 2012. Doctors have now given her permission to move around and she will make her first public appearance at Karan Johar's 40th birthday party on May 25.

Says a source, "Akshay is gearing up for baby number two. He plans to stop shooting shortly and be by his wife's side after the baby arrives, just like he'd done when their son, Aarav, was born 11 years ago. Akshay's birthday falls on September 9 and Aarav too was born in the same month. Seems like September is a lucky month for the Kumar family!

Akshay bows out

In true Khiladi spirit, the actor postponed the release of his film to avoid clashing with his friends

Posted On Thursday, May 24, 2012 at 03:54:36 AM

In the Hindi cinema industry, it’s not just the rivalries between stars that are exemplary. While many may believe that the A-list actors are always vying with each other for attention, Akshay Kumar is surely an exception.

Mirror has learnt that Akki, in true Khiladi spirit, has decided to postpone the release of his film Khiladi 786 to avoid a clash with Ajay Devgn’s Son Of Sardar and Shah Rukh Khan’s Yash Chopra directed untitled venture this Diwali. The film will now release on December 7.

Now, Son Of Sardar is a title that is very close to Akshay’s heart. Earlier, he had planned to make a film titled the same and had even registered it under his banner Hari Om Productions. But then Ajay announced his film.

“Ajay met Akshay on the sets of Rowdy Rathore to request him to part with the title Son Of Sardar. Akshay readily agreed over a handshake. So when Ajay scheduled the release of his film for Diwali 2012, Akshay decided not to clash with it at the box office. Also, Akshay is rather busy promoting Rowdy Rathore at the moment following which Joker promotions will begin. He always gives enough time to each film promotion,” revealed an insider.

“Ajay can’t stop raving about Akshay’s touching gesture of letting go of the title. In fact, it was also on his request that Akshay postponed the release of Khiladi 786,” added the source.

It’s known that big films releasing on the same day tend to eat into each other's business. And thus, giving these ventures space for a successful run is the wise thing to do. However, that’s not the only reason Akki has decided to postpone the release of his film.

Recently, Akshay was spotted bonding with Shah Rukh Khan at a recent IPL match. And since SRK’s big Yash Chopra film is all set to hit the theatres this Diwali, Akki’s decision to postpone the release of his film has only been strengthened.

As for co-producer and music director Himesh Reshammiya, he has no reasons to complain. He is composing music for both the films - Khiladi 786 and SOS. The Akshay Kumar starrer will be directed by debutante Ashish R Mohan under HR Musik, Eros International Media Ltd and Hari Om Entertainment Co.

We tried to contact the makers of Khiladi 786 but they were unavailable for comment.

My fans’ love is the greatest reward: Akshay Kumar
Upala KBR, TNN | Jun 5, 2012, 12.00AM IST

His latest film Rowdy Rathore, an actioner, released to packed theatres across India. Not just that, Akshay Kumar has broken personal records with the film, which has registered the biggest opening weekend collections of his two-decade long career.

RR has also given producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali the biggest hit of his career. "It was hysteria — no other words to describe it," says the filmmaker.
Loud ceetees greeted the actor when he visited theatres over the weekend, and saw audiences dancing in the aisles. Obviously, Akshay is thrilled, but humbly states, "I do films for my fans. Their love is the greatest reward of all."
On his return to the action genre, Akki says, "Action Dad, Action Hero, Action Man — these are the only titles I've ever wanted in my life. I would be unbearable, and bored, if I wasn't given the opportunity to push my body to its limits on a regular basis. I haven't felt this alive since shooting Rowdy Rathore. There's something very personal and thrilling about doing my own stunts. I'm addicted to the fear and adrenaline. I don't want anyone to try these filmi stunts at home, but I do know that one hasn't lived until one has greeted their fears with a twinkle in their eyes!"
On a parting note, Khiladi Kumar makes one thing clear. He says, "I'm back. I promise I won't ignore what I do well anymore."

Akshay Kumar decides to play safe with Joker
VICKEY LALWANI, Mumbai Mirror | Aug 8, 2012, 12.00AM IST

Akshay Kumar will have to redub portions of his upcoming alien adventure Joker. Reason: to prevent any future controversy over director Shirish Kunder's 'realistic' approach to filmmaking.

The film Joker is based in an imaginary place called Paglapur. However, according to the original script, its location wasn't too imaginary after all. Twice in the film, Akki would complain about the Government neglecting Paglapur, primarily because it is a disputed piece of land between Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

Filmmakers tend to venture into realism but later find themselves in a sticky situation. Akki and Shirish have however decided to play it safe.

While seeing the final draft of the film a few days back, Akki realised that perhaps mouthing the real names of states wasn't future-friendly and this may give rise to controversies once the film is screened. Thus, he suggested Shirish to change the names.

A source close to the project told us, "Shirish wasn't convinced too easily. He wanted it to remain the way he had originally envisaged. But Akki prevailed upon him by arguing that even Aamir Khan in Peepli Live had used imaginary state names."

The portions will now be redubbed by Akshay. Madhya Pradesh will change to Mukhya Pradesh, UP as Uttam Pradesh and Rajasthan as Prajasthan.

When contacted, Shirish confirmed that they have indeed decided to play it safe. "It was a joint decision. We have changed the names of Rajasthan, MP and UP now. The plot is fictional. So why venture into names of real places?"

Joker’s alien theory

Posted On Friday, August 31, 2012 at 09:20:08 AM

Shirish Kunder is at it again. During the making of his debut film Jaan- E- Mann, he had managed to antagonise Salman Khan, so much so that it took all of Farah’s good offices to mend fences with the moody star.

The making of Tees Maar Khan saw him cross swords with his wife’s friend and benefactor Shah Rukh Khan, in a battle of egos that precipitated the infamous slapgate episode. SRK had declined the film, as did Hrithik Roshan. And now, he has managed to upset the only star who stood by him through the most turbulent of times.

Akshay Kumar, his lead actor and co-producer in Joker has evidently abandoned the ambitious film. While some claim that the actor should have been professional enough to take the project to its logical conclusion, others feel that he was way too hurt to continue his association with the film. However, a brave Farah tried to deflect critics by attributing Akshay’s absence from promotional activities to “smart marketing strategy”, but two recent incidents paint a different picture.

Akshay has been on TV exhorting audiences to watch a little known film instead - Prateek Chakraborty’s From Sydney With Love. If that was not enough, he has flown off to Muscat, severing whatever tenuous connection he had with the film he had once been proud to be a part of.

So what gives? An insider close to the star spilled the beans.

“Joker was meant to be a kids’ film and that too in 3D. Akshay was really excited about it. When shooting began, Shirish assured him that though they were not shooting in the format, it will be converted to 3D during post production,” said the source. However, that idea was abandoned and Shirish had his own reasoning for it.

There was also the issue of visual effects. Akshay, who had taken keen interest in the final look of the film, was keen to use his contacts in Hollywood to get one of the best teams on board. “It was while dubbing for Transformers that he was introduced to the special effects team and wanted Joker to benefit from his resources,” says the source. But Shirish - who in his wife Farah’s words is “stubborn…and self destructive,” refused to comply.

Even then Akshay decided to play along. Till the film was ready for final edit. The fissures ran too deep. “Akshay wanted some changes in the final edit. Shirish, who is an editor himself, does not like being told what to do. That’s when Akshay began to distance himself from the film,” says the source. It did not help that Shirish had introduced the item song by Chitrangda, who many feel is in poor taste and incongruous.

Sources say the star feels slighted by Shirish and Farah. “He has never really tomtomed about the many little things he has done for them - not even the massive discount he got them on the sprawling penthouse they recently bought and moved into.

Or turning a generous blind eye to the many budgeting issues that came up while they handled production,” says a friend of Akshay. But when Shirish continued to dig in his heels, he had had enough. Farah, who has so far borne the brunt of her husband’s eccentricities, could do little to salvage the situation, other than appeal to SRK to do a promo for her film and take the ‘aliens’ to the homes of her friends for photo ops.

But Akshay’s absence- after just a handful of TV interviews - and Sonakshi’s cold shouldering - after she attended a few cursory events - has obviously affected the film.

Says trade analyst Amod Mehra, “When a producer/hero of the film disowns the film, it sends out wrong signals. Akshay has shifted his focus to his next home-production- OMG: Oh My God. Whatever interest exhibitors had in the film has died down. UTV has not even prevailed upon the exhibitors or demand a minimum number of shows. It is clear that even the producers are not too interested.”

Girish Wankhade, Deputy GM- Corporate Communications and Public Relations, Cinemax India Ltd, said, “Joker had great prospects because the hit Rowdy Rathore lead pair is in the film. But there is hardly any promotional buzz.”

Anand Vishal, Head of Operations of Fun Republic compared Joker to Akshay’s last hit. “The interest is not on the same level,” he admitted.

A source from a leading multiplex in western suburbs (on request of anonymity) gave us some numbers, “We sold only 500 tickets by Thursday evening. For Akshay’s last film Rowdy Rathore, we had sold about 5000 tickets by this time.”

But both Wankhede and Vishal were hopeful. “There have been films which had poor promotion, but went on to do good business. I think Joker will work on word of mouth, if the content is good enough.

OMG! Another Hindi film axed in UAE

After Mausam, Raaz 3 and Kya Super Kool Hain Hum, the latest film to have been banned there is Oh My God. Filmmakers are upset as the industry has consequently lost nearly Rs 20 crore in the past one year

Posted On Friday, September 28, 2012 at 09:12:45 AM

Grazing Goat Productions’ Akshay Kumar-starrer, OMG Oh My God releasing in India today, is the latest in a not-so-short line of Hindi films to have been banned in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Earlier victims include Pankaj Kapur’s Mausam, Vikram Bhatt’s Raaz 3 and Sachin Yardi’s Kya Super Kool Hain Hum.

Needless to say, filmmakers are at their wit’s end. And buzz in the trade is the Hindi film industry has incurred losses to the tune of a whopping Rs 20 crore in just the past one year, courtesy UAE’s actions.

Similarly, the makers of OMG Oh My God were shocked to learn of the ban on Monday this week. Vikram Malhotra, Head Honcho of Viacom18 Motion Pictures, co-producers of the film, told Mirror, “We have lost at least Rs 4 crore. It’s terrible.”

It all started in July 2011 when Mausam, a love story between an Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot (Shahid Kapoor) and a Kashmiri woman (Sonam Kapoor) was replaced at the last minute by Hollywood film Chloeat in theatres across UAE.

Next, in August 2012, Kya Super Kool Hain Hum produced by Ekta Kapoor, got the axe in Kuwait and Muscat. This was just after the Bandra Police registered a FIR (First Information Report) against the film for having hurt the religious sentiments of the Christian community.

Apparently, Kya Super… featured a priest in a cassock with cross around his neck and rosary in hand, solemnizing the marriage of two dogs and later sprinkling holy water, which didn’t go down well with the community. Earlier this month, Raaz 3 that opened to packed houses in India, was banned in the UAE. Reason: the sexually explicit content and portrayal of the spiritual world that didn’t cut ice with the censors there.

Vishesh Films ended up losing up to Rs 5 crore in the bargain. Producer Mahesh Bhatt simply said, “UAE is a sovereign nation. They have their own set of rules.

We are a free country, so we are bound to feel that their rules are harsh.” However, another filmmaker said, “It is terribly depressing if the UAE censors reject your film.

Since the past two years, there is a huge market for Hindi films in UAE. We are losing a lot of money. The worst part is that the Censor Board in UAE rejects your film just three to four days before the date of release. By then, we have done so much publicity and planning, and it all goes down the drain.”

Trade analyst Amod Mehra revealed, “Not a single Hindi film which depicts caste or religion in any way has ever released in UAE.”

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said, “The scene is unlikely to change. It’s always going to be a ‘try your luck’ situation in UAE.

India is losing a very big chunk of money. Especially Raaz would have fetched a lot since its lead actor Emraan Hashmi is a big favourite there. Ganpati and Kaala Jadoo in Raaz were probably the reasons why it faced the axe in UAE. Think of it: Ek Tha Tiger too didn’t find favour in Pakistan, and several fans of Salman Khan in that country were denied the opportunity to see him in a theatre. I guess, every country has its own set of rules.”

OMG! Paresh and Akshay once again

Posted On Tuesday, October 02, 2012 at 02:59:11 AM

Buoyed by the success of their first coproduction, OMG: Oh My God, Paresh Rawail and Akshay Kumar are gearing up for their next outing together.

Without divulging too many details, Paresh told Mirror, “We haven’t really decided what Akshay and I will co-produce next. But we’ll definitely work together again. He has been a treat to work with. I have my production house, Playtime Creations. I feel comfortable working with Akshay. As an actor, I have to create opportunities of my own. Akshay is a good ally in this endeavour.”

However, buzz is Paresh and Akshay’s next will be the screen adaptation of another long-running Paresh play, Dear Father, which is about an average Gujarati family.

Paresh has a double role in the play that marks his return to Gujarati theatre after 16 years. Apparently, both Paresh and Akshay are very close to their fathers in real life and empathise with the content of the play.

Khiladi 786 new song Lonely: Akshay Kumar is shamelessly irritating in this one!

Prathamesh Jadhav9.30 AM IST 10.26.2012

We could not find a better word than ‘pathetic’ to describe the annoying Himesh Reshammiya number starring Akshay Kumar and Asin

Our curiosity about what Akshay Kumar will be seen doing in his upcoming film Khiladi 786 is simply butchered by what this song presented –both visually and musically. Sung and composed by Himesh Reshammiya and penned haphazardly by Shabir Ahmed, this number is plain disgraceful. Akshay Kumar and Asin are seen shaking their collective booty desperately to make this number look funny. Going by the tormenting presentation, it seems that Akki is still in Joker mode and has not pulled himself out of the loony character he portrayed in Shirish Kunder’s disastrous alien saga.

Now you watch this song (though we suggest you don’t subject yourself to the sheer suffering) and tell us what torments you most – the music, the choreography or Himessss bhai’s (in)famous nasal voice.

Akshay’s the 'Boss' of Delhi-6
Oct 29, 2012, 12.00AM IST

Akshay Kumar returned to his favourite Chandni Chowk, a place where he spent a part of his childhood, a couple of days ago to shoot his next film, Boss.

This is the second time this year that Akki has shot in the streets of Old Delhi. Directed by Anthony D'Souza of Blue, this film is an action flick in which Akshay plays a kind-hearted gangster. In Chandni Chowk, he shot a chase sequence with a few junior artistes and a body double. He also shot later at the Kalkaji temple in South Delhi.

Fans in Vakil Pura

The sequence used props like bicycles, rickshaws, thelas, battered old scooters and plastic cans in the streets of Vakil Pura. Eighteen-year-old Shivam Singh, who watched the shooting there, gushed, "Akshay was just amazing. The last time we saw him here was during the shooting of Special Chabbis, when he shot in the same streets of Gali Guliyan in Vakil Pura."

Dressed in a green jacket with a black kurta and denims, Akshay nimbly hopped and jumped through the narrow streets of Gali Guliyan, doing some stretching exercises and a little warming up before canning the shot in two-three takes. Resident Arun Kumar Goyal, 41, who lives very close to the street where the film was being shot, said, "Kaafi achhi acting kar raha hai Akshay, ekdum natural. But his junior artistes are unable to do it the same way, in the first take. His bouncers kept a vigilant eye on people watching from their balconies, otherwise we'd have made a complete video of this shooting."

Master of stunts

Akshay also shot in the Khari Baoli area, where he did a jump and chase sequence. Twenty one-year-old Nafees Khan, a popcorn vendor who saw the shoot, said, "I saw Akshay jumping from a three-storey building in the main market. He was all trussed up in a harness, cables and safety equipment."

The crew had taken the required permissions from local authorities, but local police officials still seemed dissatisfied with the whole process. Raj Kumar Khatana, SHO, Lahori Gate Police Station for Khari Baoli area, said, "They take permissions from us but never reveal for what purpose - a full-fledged film or a documentary. Neither are we informed which stars are expected to join, nor are there details of how many people there are in the cast and crew. And this happens with most shoots."

When Akshay Kumar Got Emotional While Shooting Boss

Posted by: NabanitaPublished: Friday, August 23, 2013, 17:47 [IST]

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar reportedly got emotional while shooting for the movie Boss. As per the reports, Boss is being shot in Bangkok and Delhi and the actor is closely connected with both these two cities.

Akshay Kumar has spent a long phase of his life in both Delhi and Bangkok. Born in a punjabi family, Akshay Kumar was raised in Delhi's Chandni Chowk neighbourhood before moving to Mumbai. He later shifted to Bangkok and studied martial arts there. Hence, years after becoming a star, when Akki got the opportunity to shoot for his film in these two important cities, he got nostalgic.

Talking to a leading daily, Akshay Kumar said, "It's a very emotional feeling when I visit my old house. That's where I spent my entire childhood." Sources informed the daily that the entire team of Boss was shooting for a scene "in Chandni Chowk, which is some 200 meters away from Akshay's childhood home". But, the Khiladi Kumar couldn't visit his old house during the day, since there were chances of him getting mobbed. Hence, early in the morning, around 4 am, he drove "to his house, stayed there for 30 minutes and reminisced his childhood days."

Akshay Kumar-Ekta Kapoor At Loggerheads?

Posted by: PuriUpdated: Thursday, August 22, 2013, 14:34 [IST]

Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara is in news since its inception. Now, according to recent reports, Ekta Kapoor is not very happy with the lead actor of the movie, Akshay Kumar. It is said that Ekta feels that Akshay has not given enough time to the movie's promotions.

Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara has got a very lukewarm response from the audience. The movie failed to win the Box-Office race and rumour has it Ekta Kapoor holds Akshay Kumar responsible for it. Ekta believes that Akshay should have followed Shahrukh Khan, who kept promoting his movie Chennai Express, even after its release

Talking about Ekta Kapoor, a source told a leading daily, "Considering that Shahrukh Khan was busy promoting Chennai Express even days after the release, she felt Akshay Kumar needed to be equally present every where. Initially he was greatly involved and gung-ho about the film. But a few days prior to the release of the film, especially once Chennai Express released and started steaming ahead, he seemed to have given up on Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara. His enthusiasm suddenly waned."

The source also said that when Ekta Kapoor needed Akshay Kumar the most, he was not there. Well, we wonder what Akshay Kumar has to say on it!

Akshay Kumar's recently released film Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara (OUATIMD) did not get the expected review from the critics. Most of the critics have given the movie very low ratings. Akshay is very miffed with it and has slammed the critics by saying that instead of writing their opinion they should ask the audience about the movie.

According to most of the film critics, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara is not even a one time watch. Talking about that, Akshay Kumar told a leading daily in an interview, "It will be great if the reviewers write the reviews along with the audience, sit down with them, talk to them and seek their feedback. Ask the audience, they will never go wrong,"

There are some people jinhe film ki ABC nahi maloom. Aisa nahi hona chahiye. Audience has become very smart." (There are some people who don't know the basics of filmmaking. This should not happen. Audience has become very smart)

Akshay Kumar also said that he respects those critics who writes their reviews keeping viewers in mind.

Apart from the critics review, OUATIMD has suffered majorly because of Shahrukh Khan's Chennai Express. Chennai Express had already crossed 190 crores and is expected to make 200 crores at the Box-Office.
