Bollywood stars in no mood to celebrate Holi
Monday, March 1, 2010, 15:06

Frankly, no one is really in a mood to celebrate Holi in a big way. The lack of enthusiasm this year has plenty to do with the way things are going for the entertainment industry. An actor on condition of anonymity puts the situation in a nutshell. "Earlier we had grand Holi celebrations in at least 5-6 major filmy families. Now it's dwindled to just 1 or 2 Holi bashes."

In the past, film folks had a blast .The film industry chose to celebrate Holi either at Raj Kapoor's Holi bash(by far the most well-attended), followed by the Bachchans' warm open-house Holi festivities. Then there were Subhash Ghai, Yash Chopra and the Azmis, Javed and Shabana who hosted and continue to host the annual Holi bash. But the colourful spirit of Holi went out with Raj Kapoor. The true champion of filmy Holi bashes at R.K Studios in Chembur used to be a riot of colours and festivity every Holi. The entire film industry and all their kith and kin would arrive in spotless white to be dunked into the famous RK colour tank.

Now the equations have changed drastically. Since the passing away of Raj Kapoor there's no Holi at RK Studios any more. The family's superstar-scion Ranbir Kapoor is busy shooting in the US . The rest of the family is no mood for Holi. Holi at the Bachchans is also expected to be a subdued close family affair with little or no shor-sharaaba. Even Akshay Kumar who generally loves the Holi revelry is heading out of Mumbai this weekend. "Just me, my wife and son driving out of the city," says Akshay implying there's little joy in being home for Holi this year.

Akshay has a point. Holi ceased to be a source of fun long ago. As Shabana Azmi puts it, "The state must ensure safety and protection for women and men must make sure that the day of celebration doesn't turn into an occasion for mourning." Urmila Matondkar, however, is not daunted by the safety factor. "Holi isn't unsafe for women provided you're cautious and play Holi with people who are known to you. In any case I'm not much into Holi , bhang and masti."

For Shabana the Holi spirit never dies. "It's always an open house for friends and family on the occasion of Holi at my parents' home in Janki Kutir. There's a generous flow of non-toxic colours, gaana-bajaana, and khaana...a long-standing tradition in our house as part of India's ganga-jumna tehzeeb." However even the never-say-die Shabana is out of town this Holi.

By Satish Sundaresan, April 5, 2011 - 08:40 IST

Readers may note the fact that, prior to this man, it was none other than Big B who was endorsing the said brand.

Akki dubs in UK for Transformers

Posted On Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 03:48:02 AM

Quite a busy man he is. Akshay Kumar, who is currently shooting for Housefull 2 in London, had to finish dubbing for Transformers:Dark of the moon too before he left India for his schedule.

The producers of the film, Viacom 18, were apprehensive of getting the portions to India so they arranged for the actor to dub in London itself.

As per the sources, though the actor had dubbed for almost the whole film before he left India, there were certain portions of the film that the producers were not willing to bring to India just yet. “Michael Bay did not want these portions to be dubbed by the local dubbing agents as they are quite sensitive.

And since Akshay could not have made it to Los Angeles, they decided to get the required content to London,” says the source. “So Akshay took some time out from his schedule on Thursday to dub for the film,” adds the source.

The best way to survive is to be you

Akki was swinging from monkey bars when he realised he has completed 20 years in Bollywood

Posted On Monday, August 29, 2011 at 02:44:25 AM

In 1991, a tall, dark and good looking 24-year-old man made his Bollywood debut with Pramod Chakravarthy’s Saugandh. A year later, with Abbas-Mastan’s college thriller Khiladi, the actor tasted success.

Christened Khiladi Kumar after his first blockbuster, Akshay Kumar slowly but steadily rose to stardom. Completing 20 years in Bollywood, the actor recalls his struggle to the top, marriage to superstar Rajesh Khanna’s daughter and missing his own father.

“I was in my gym swinging from the monkey bars, the day I officially completed 20 years in the industry. Honestly, I didn’t know what to feel. Back then, I never thought I would still be making movies 20 years down the line. I remember taking my family for the first screening of my debut film thinking, ‘There you go, this is enough to make them proud’.

Their happiness gave me the strength and determination to try harder every day. At every screening, since my first, the smiles on their faces make all the pain and effort seem worthwhile,” recalls the actor.

Born in Amritsar, raised in Delhi and then working as a chef in Bangkok, Akshay had no connections to the film industry.

And after his initial break, the actor had to try really hard to create his own space in the industry. “No matter how much you are loved or respected, the minute you lose focus, or make a small mistake, people will tear you apart. One has to deal with it. You give your best, stay immune to gossip and think only about your goal.

“The best way to survive in this industry is to be the person ‘you’ want to be and do what ‘you’ feel is right,” adds the actor.

It was like a fairytale for Akshay when having found his foothold in the industry; he won the heart of superstar Rajesh Khanna’s daughter Twinkle. “Every man’s ultimate dream is to marry the woman he loves. But for me, marrying a woman born to a world I could only dream about...was something else.

My soul mate was waiting for me here. Had I not made an effort to get where I am in life, I may never have met Twinkle - the one woman who made me the man I am and the father I was destined to be.”

Even after twenty years in the industry, Akshay doesn’t let people get too close to him. “No one has got close enough to use or abuse me and even if they did, I wouldn’t get too emotional about it. The only thing I ever get emotional about is my family. I am kind to everyone but I trust no one. That keeps me from getting hurt,” reveals the actor.

Even today, the one person Akshay misses is his father, late Hariom Bhatia. “I miss him more in happier times. When the going gets tough, I think about all that he ever taught me. But in happier times, I miss him more.

I miss not sharing my happiness with him. Every day I wish my father could see me with my son Aarav. That’s when I miss him the most. Work is work, but family is for life. That’s what really matters to me,” concludes the Khiladi of Bollywood.

Akki's rise to stardom

1991: Makes a humble beginning with Saugandh

1992: Success strikes with Khiladi

1992: Enters the big league, signs Yash Chopra's production Yeh Dillagi

1993: Gets the best actor nomination for Yeh Dillagi

1995: The Khiladi era begins: strikes gold with films like Sabse Bada Khiladi and Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi

1997: Best supporting actor nomination for yet another YRF venture Dil To Pagal hai

2000: Khiladi decides to jump to a new genre, stars in Priyadarshan's Hera Pheri

2005: Wins an award for best performance in a comic role for Garam Masala

2007: Launches his own production house Hariom Productions

2007: His best year ever with four consecutive hits (Namastey London, Heyy Babyy, Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Welcome) and no flops at the box office

2008: Becomes Bollywood's highest paid actor and makes his small screen debut with Khatron Ke Khiladi - Fear Factor

No matter how much you are loved or respected, the minute you lose focus, or make a small mistake, people will tear you apart

Akshay Kumar's tribute to Punjabis
TNN | Aug 28, 2011, 12.00AM IST

After the roles that Akshay Kumar has played in recent films, he has created quite a strong Punjabi connection with his audience.

The actor, who has Punjabi roots, has always wanted to pay a tribute to Singhs around the world for their sherdil. Akshay's latest song, where he is rapping, is a promotional one for his film Speedy Singhs.
He shot this special song Shera Di Kaum Punjabi, with Grammy award winner Ludacris and RDB, a pop Punjabi trio. This rap number, composed by Ludacris and RDB, has recently released and is quite a hit with partygoers.

On Akshay's experience of working with international artists, a source reveals, "It was an exciting experience for Akshay to collaborate with Ludacris for the music video. Akshay is always looking for opportunities to work with great artists from across the globe. He has made several films in the past, but this will be his first Hollywood film as a producer. He will not be acting in the film though."

I am completely desi: Akshay Kumar

Posted On Friday, November 18, 2011 at 02:57:09 PM

Desi Boyz is about two friends, an Indian and a Pakistani who lose their jobs during the 2008 economic recession. So they start working as male escorts to support their families. Akshay Kumar plays Jerry Patel in Rohit Dhawan’s latest. “The movie is inspired from a true story. But only 15-20 minutes of the movie revolves around John and I being male escorts. Other than this, it is an emotionally sensitive film. It talks about the bonds of friendship and brotherhood between these two boys,” Akshay says.

After movies like Namastey London and Patiala House, Akshay now embodies the true meaning of desi. So how desi he is in real life? “If u read my tweets, I tweet everyday about how you can be a desi boy. Desi boys are very simple and are extremely attached to their families, they never leave their roots. No matter where they stay, they can never forget their country. I am completely desi.”

As a testimony to his desipan, Akshay makes it a point to converse only in Hindi. “I like to talk only in Hindi. We work in Hindi movies and we must like to speak the language. English is often just used as a cool quotient which I don’t agree with. I greatly admire Katrina Kaif. She didn’t know even a word of Hindi and now she has learnt so much from her films,” he said.

After having worked with both David Dhawan as well as his son Rohit Dhawan, Akshay also spoke about their individual style of working. We hear father and son are very different in their approach. “David does not go according to any rule book. He waits for the artist to come and enact the scene and then decides where to place the camera. Rohit is very different. Both of them have their own place and importance in the industry,” says Akshay. “Rohit has done a fabulous job with Desi Boyz. He has made it young and breezy. It’s very lovable and you can relate to it. The film is very natural in every sense.”

Akshay will be working with Chitrangada for the first time. When asked about the chemistry he shares with his co-stars, he said, “Chitrangandha is very pretty and fun to work with. She is very desi looking and reminds me of Smita Patil. She is a wonderful actress.” John and Akshay were last seen together in Garam Masala and were a huge hit.

After doing a number of action and comedy movies, this Bollywood khiladi now aspires to play the bad boy in his next.

Twinkle's not interested in films anymore: Akshay Kumar
P Sangeetha, TNN | Nov 26, 2011, 12.00AM IST

He has been in the industry for two decades, but Akshay Kumar still casts the same spell on audiences that he did during his Khiladi days. Though the macho actor has been shuttling between cities to promote his upcoming film, there is no trace of fatigue about him and he remains a bundle of energy. During a recent visit to the city, Akshay took some time off to chat with BT...

You and John Abraham seem to be the latest Jai-Veeru in town... Aaj ke Jai-Veeru... Wah Wah! We are also the latest Ram and Balram. John and I are teaming up again after Garam Masala. He has come a long way since then and has grown as an actor. I see a big difference in him. We have great chemistry in the film.

What was it like working with Deepika Padukone and Chitrangda Singh? Deepika is the epitome of beauty and it was great to team up with her again after Chandni Chowk to China and Housefull. As for Chitrangda - though she has just taken the plunge into commercial cinema, she is not a newcomer and has the ability to blow everyone away with her stunning looks and her acting prowess.

There is some confusion regarding the remake rights of the Tamil hit number Appadi Podu from the film Ghilli. Actor Sonu Sood claims he has bought the rights for his film Lucky Unlucky, but another report says you had already bought the rights of the song a few years ago... I don't know which Sonu Sood you are talking about. My production company considered remaking the song a long time ago, but so many films come and go that you don't remember what is happening with every project. My company has 4-5 films in the pipeline that don't have me in the lead. I have no idea who has got the rights for Appadi Podu. And there's no fight here. I am sure the right person will get it in the end.

Will you ever take the plunge into south Indian films? I have already done a south Indian film, that too in Kannada. It's a film called Vishnu Vijaya, which had Ashwini Bhave and the late Vishnuvardhanji in the cast. The film was made in Kannada and Hindi. The Hindi version was known as Ashaant. I want to do a film in Tamil as I've already done a Kannada project. In fact, I am waiting for someone to approach me with a good offer.

What are your thoughts on Bangalore? It was in Bangalore that I shot the first scene of my career for my maiden venture, Saugandh. Hence, this city will always have a special place in my heart.

Any chances of you and Twinkle doing a film together? No! She is not interested in films anymore.

I’ll take my dad-in-law on a vacation very soon

Posted On Thursday, December 01, 2011 at 03:00:09 AM

We hear that you are miffed with the censor board’s decision to give Desi Boyz an A certificate?

See, I wouldn’t say that the censor board wrongly imposed an A certificate on Desi Boyz. I guess they do their job rather well. But, if you ask what my personal take on Desi Boyz is, I would say that it is the cleanest ‘A’ film I have seen in my life.

Are you of the opinion that the censor board has previously passed off far more objectionable content with a ‘U’ or ‘U/A’?

Hmmm… I am not a kid. Let me not play the blame game. It would be a wrong way to go ahead in life.
Go on…

But there is no doubt that an ‘A’ film loses out on at least 25 percent of its potential audience. A section of the moviegoers, who bring kids to the theatre, are not aware that the movie is ‘A’ and they return home. The other section that is aware, just does not watch the film without their kids. Toh collections pe adverse effect toh hota hi hai.
Some of your recent films have not done too well. How have you taken it?

Every profession has its fair share of highs and lows. Like you work harder when you in a low phase, I too do the same. There is no disappointment. I look ahead, never back.
Do you think that your position is affected by the relatively new entrants into the industry like Shahid Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan?

No. Their entry hasn’t created competition for me. Besides, 180 films release every year and we all have enough good work.
You recently told someone that in this day and age you cannot have a price tag. What’s prompted you to think this way?

That’s right. Today, the market is very volatile. And because there are so many fluctuations, it leads to re-negotiations. That is something nobody likes and I, for one, would surely like to avoid that. Hence, it is always better to be a producer of the films you act in.
So, you are going to co-produce all the films you star in?

Well, I would like to produce at least 80 percent of the films I act in.
Speaking of producing, why did you decide to launch another production house -Grazing Goat, when you already have Hari Om?

I wouldn’t like to comment on Grazing Goat yet (Mumbai Mirror learnt that Akshay and his Grazing Goat partner Ashvini Yardi had a puja at their new Juhu office, last evening).
It seems that you’ve grown weary of the comedy genre.

No. But I am getting back to action for the next five years. When my son Aarav was young, I was apprehensive about doing dangerous stunts because I never use a body-double. When you are 50, it becomes difficult to do hardcore action films. It’s certainly not advisable na (laughs)?
Well we’ve heard that there haven’t been any comedic moments after working with your good friend Vipul Shah in Action Replayy.

Aisa kuch bhi nahin hai. I am ready to work with him again.
There has been a lot of talk about your father-in-law Rajesh Khanna being ill. What’s going on?

My father-in-law is fine. In fact, we are soon going on a vacation (Mumbai Mirror learns that the Khannas and Kumars will go to Goa to usher in Twinkle’s birthday on December 29). There are too many unnecessary rumours about my father-in-law. You know what, he doesn’t know anything about Bigg Boss and the media spread stories last year that he was going to be in the show. What else you want me to say on him?

Akki gets soaked, falls sick

Posted On Saturday, December 24, 2011 at 02:23:16 AM

Akshay Kumar was a victim of an occupational hazard. The actor, who was shooting a fight sequence in heavy rain for two consecutive days for Rowdy Rathore, came down with a fever as a result. In fact, Mumbai Mirror has learnt that after shooting the 17 scenes at the under-construction site in Mulund, he fell so ill on Wednesday evening that the shoot scheduled for the following day had to be canceled.

A unit member explained, "Akshay was shooting an action sequence, in which he had to fight 40 men in very rainy weather. He was wet and had to continue shooting for 12 hours at a stretch. That's how he caught a temperature. Director Prabhu Deva was informed later that night that Akki had taken ill and would not be able to shoot on Thursday. "

The shoot has tentatively been rescheduled to Friday, as it is subject to Akshay's health.

Both, Akshay Kumar and Prabhu Deva were unavailable for comment.

Akki can’t play God

The actor opted out of his own production and won’t be able to portray Lord Krishna in Oh My God, a film based on Paresh Rawal’s play

Posted On Thursday, December 29, 2011 at 02:03:33 AM

Akshay Kumar was supposed to play Lord Krishna in his next home production based on Paresh Rawal's successful play Krishna Vs Kanhaiya, a story about the clash between an atheist and God. However, Akki, reportedly has opted out of playing God.

The film that has now been titled Oh My God! and is Akshay's first co-production under his recently set up production company Grazing Goat, will be directed by Umesh Shukla, who had also directed the play it is based on. Ashvini Yardi, ex head honcho of a television channel gets into film production with this venture as well.

A source close to the film revealed to Mumbai Mirror, "Originally, Paresh Rawal was supposed to produce the film. But now his company Playtime will be the line producer for the project."

Explaining the reason behind Akshay's decision to opt out of the project, our source added, "Despite having to work on five films in 2012, Akshay tried his best to allot dates to his co-production with Ashvini. However, things failed to fall in place. He is tied up with five films next year- Shirish Kunder's Joker, Prabhu Devaa's Rowdy Rathore, Milan Luthria's Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Part 2, Ashish Mohan's Khiladi 786 and Neeraj Pandey's Special Chabbis. And Ashwini wanted to put her first film on floors in January 2012."

"Akshay and Ashwini had long meetings. Akshay is still trying to work out his dates, but chances of him remaining in the film are pretty remote. Even the entry scene had been completely worked out keeping Akshay in mind. So, all that will have to be done all over again. A big star will be chosen to replace Akshay," added the source.

According to sources from the industry, Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn are being considered to replace Akshay. Akshay and Ashvini remained unavailable for comment.

Akki injures his shoulder

Posted On Saturday, January 07, 2012 at 02:13:47 AM

His shoot schedules for Prabhu Devaa's Rowdy Rathore have been rather jinxed. On December 24, 2011, Mumbai Mirror reported how Akshay Kumar had come down with fever after shooting for an action scene in heavy rain for two consecutive days. And now we hear that the actor, who has been filming at the same location - an under construction site in Mulund - injured his shoulder while shooting for the film's pre-climax scene.

A friend of the actor revealed that despite being hurt, Akshay completed the shoot. He only became aware of the intensity of the injury later. According to his friend, the actor has been advised complete rest and as a result, the film's shoot has been postponed.

“The injury was more serious than he expected. In fact, he was in such excruciating pain that he returned earlier than scheduled from Goa. After he threw a birthday bash for his father-in-law and actor Rajesh Khanna on December 28, Akshay decided against staying back for New Year and left the very next day,” explained the actor's friend.

Reportedly, the shoot of Rowdy Rathore was initially scheduled to resume on January 3, 2012 in Bangalore. However, due to Akshay's condition, his friend told us that the shoot has now been postponed to January 11.

The friend added, “Since Akshay has to shoot the climax scene, which demands heavy duty action sequences, he wanted to give his shoulder time to heal before he resumes work.”

Akshay Kumar remained unavailable for comments.

Akki sings for Khiladi 786-Made in Punjab

Posted On Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 02:07:17 AM

With his first attempt as a singer producing a hit track for the film Singh Is King, Akshay Kumar is all geared up to repeat history. Mumbai Mirror has learnt that the actor, who is co-producing Khiladi 786-Made in Punjab with Himesh Reshammiya, will render his voice to a hip-hop dance number for the film. According to a source close to the developments, the idea was put forward by Himesh.

The source explained, "Himesh convinced Akshay to sing the song. Akshay was a little sceptical in the beginning, but when he heard the scratch, he was excited. The song will also be picturised on Akshay himself." The film, which is directed by Ashish R Mohan, will go on floors in April and will be released on Diwali.

Akshay Kumar plays Hindu and Muslim in same film

Posted On Thursday, February 09, 2012 at 02:07:01 PM

In his home-production Oh My God, Akshay Kumar will be seen in multiple avatars.

No, he is not doing a double role of brothers separated at birth and growing up in Hindu and Muslim families. Rather one Akshay Kumar would be seen playing Hindu and Muslim character in the same film.

The film in question is Oh My God being produced by Akshay Kumar himself along with Ashvini Yardi. And much against the speculations that Akshay won't be a part of his home-production, he will be seen portraying multiple characters. An industry insider reveals, "Akshay Kumar will be seen in multiple avatars from a Hindu character to a Muslim one. Different looks are being designed keeping his character in mind. From pathani to dhoti-clad look, he will be seen sporting all". However it's still not revealed whether he would be playing God in the film.

The film is a cinematic adaptation of the popular Gujarati play Kanji Virrudh Kanji. Paresh Rawal plays the role of an atheist who challenges God after he loses everything in an earthquake. Umesh Shukla who directed the play will be directing the film as well.

Rowdy riding high

The satellite rights for Akshay Kumar’s upcoming SLB production fetches Rs 35 crore

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s last film Guzaarish failed to do too well at the box office. Despite that, the filmmaker’s upcoming project Rowdy Rathore has been sold for a staggering Rs 35 crore, say sources from the trade. Perhaps it’s the Akshay Kumar magic that has worked for him this time around.

This is happens to be the highest that Bhansali has received for any of his films till date. Interestingly, even Akshay Kumar’s films in the past had not generated such a high price. His film Housefull, produced by Sajid Nadiadwala fetched the highest satellite price for the actor so far.

Mumbai Mirror has learnt that Bhansali, who had been in talks with broadcasters over the satellite rights of the film directed by Prabhu Deva, sealed the deal last week.

While UTV’s CEO Siddharth Roy Kapur remained unavailable for comment, a source from the production house confirmed the story. Rowdy Rathore is co-produced by Bhansali, UTV and Shabina Khan.

Meanwhile…

Akki gets tough with Paresh

On one hand, his film Rowdy Rathore gets a record deal for the satellite rights and on the other, his co-production Oh My God! is racing to the finishing line. Akshay Kumar, playing the role of a tough producer has instructed his co-producer, friend and lead actor Paresh Rawal to learn how to ride a scooter in eight days flat.

"There are major portions in the film where Rawal is supposed to drive the two-wheeler in the lanes and bylanes of Mumbai. And he doesn't know how to ride a scooter at all," a source told Mumbai Mirror.

That's when Akshay stepped in and asked Paresh to start learning. According to the source, "Akshay makes it a point to wake Paresh up at 5.30 am every day. Paresh has been riding the scooter in the lanes of Juhu since the past three or four days."

"Sometimes when Paresh wouldn’t get it right, Nikhi Ratnaparkhi (the other actor seen in pic), would help Paresh out with riding," added the source.
