Emraan Hashmi links Mumbai rains to Tum Mile
Thursday, November 12, 2009, 14:35

With the sky pouring open and warnings of Cyclone 04A crossing Mumbai, it seems like the history of 7/11 is being refreshed in the minds of the people. Incidentally, the 11/11 rains in a strange coincidence falls in place with the upcoming release of the Bhatt camp film Tum Mile, which is ironically based on the 7/11 floods.

Starring serial kisser Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan, Tum Mile was inspired by the events of the 7/11 Mumbai floods. Apparently, the film was to be released on the same date, but got delayed due to various reasons. Now with a November 13 release, Tum Mile has sparked off conspiracy theories as the news of a cyclone hitting Mumbai cropped up.

Wondering aloud on his twitter actor Emraan Hashmi stated, “Looks like Tum Mile has brought along the rains to Mumbai.”

Considering the rarity of a November rain, the idea does seem plausible. Whatever maybe the cause, but certainly rains have raked in free publicity for this film.

Tum Mile highlight: Emraan-Soha kiss
Thursday, November 12, 2009, 17:09

Tum Mile is perhaps one of the most under-hyped films of the year. It is not promoted in a big manner but people in the film industry are waiting with bated-breath, as Mahesh Bhatt has the calibre to turn things his way. The unlikely pairing of Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan also has created curiosity amongst the people.

The film is based on the infamous July 2005 Mumbai floods. It tells about two people meeting each other after a long hiatus, and that too amidst chaos and tragedy. They drop their guards and emotions during the ordeal. They make some important revelations on the fateful night.

One of the highlights of the film is the use of 26 July 2005 flood as its backdrop. The makers of the film dared to take on the real life disaster. Emraan even posted on Twitter that Tum Mile might have brought rains to Mumbai a couple of days ago. The advantage that the film enjoys is the incredible knowledge of Mahesh Bhatt, who is ever ready to help whenever needed.

However, the ultimate highlight of the film will be the hot kiss between the lead pair Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan. What is the big deal with kiss as almost every film has one? You may ask. But it can be very sensuous when Emraan, who is known by the name 'serial kisser', is leading from the front. It is said that there are not one but two kisses between the lead pair.

The music of Tum Mile composed by Pritam has gone down well with the music lovers, which is typical of Mahesh Bhatt's films. In fact, it is hitting the charts hard.

This film produced by Mahesh Bhatt and directed by Kunal Deshmukh is all set to hit the theatres tomorrow, November 13.

Watch out for this hard-hitting flick!

Tum Mile Review
Friday, November 13, 2009, 11:31

In Tum Mile, a couple faces two storms. The storm within, when they come face to face after their breakup. The storm outside, when a natural calamity strikes Mumbai on 26th July, 2005 [unprecedented rainfall devastated Mumbai on this date].

After Jannat, director Kunal Deshmukh [KD] chooses a love story yet again. It's about an estranged couple, but the wallpaper in Tum Mile is the Mumbai floods. Naturally then, the expectations from Tum Mile are colossal, given the fact that Tum Mile is the first film that attempts to chronicle the natural calamity on celluloid, with seriousness.

Had KD limited himself to narrating the ups and downs in a live-in relationship, Tum Mile may've struck a chord. But if you're attempting a disaster movie [its promotions send out strong signals], you'd be eager to know how KD recreates the horrors of 26th July on celluloid. Let's not forget, the catastrophe is still etched in our memory and has tremendous recall-value.

While KD succeeds in depicting the tiffs between the lovers, it's the disaster aspect that doesn't make much of an impact. That's because you strongly feel that the infamous Mumbai floods should've been given more prominence, instead of using it as a tool to take the story forward. 26th July, 2005 rang an ominous bell for most, but amidst all the chaos and the tragedy, it re-united two star-crossed ex-lovers.

Two people [Emraan Hashmi, Soha Ali Khan] meet after a hiatus of six years. What starts off as a seemingly innocuous encounter on the same flight back to Mumbai, ends up as a rollercoaster ride through some of the darkest hours of Mumbai, as they see the city get swamped with disaster and loss... and are forced to stick together in this time of crisis.

26th July, 2005 remains etched in your memory and I'm sure, every Mumbaikar would've a story to tell vis-à-vis what transpired with them or their beloved/relatives/friends/acquaintances on that fateful day. Tum Mile also highlights the dilemma of a couple, who once shared a beautiful relationship, but have moved on in life after they split, till they meet again on 26th July.

Opposites attract and so do Emraan and Soha in Tum Mile. Although their story goes back and forth several times, the narrative doesn't confuse the viewer one bit. So far, so good.

But the problem lies in integrating the natural calamity with the love story. Even if you're a non-Mumbaikar, you'd vividly recall the images that were flashed on news channels continuously or perhaps, you may've watched the footage on internet. But in Tum Mile, the nature's fury doesn't come across strongly or effectively. In a few scenes, yes, you do draw parallels with real life, but the impact it ought to make is just not there. Something is amiss!

KD has handled the love story very well. The tiffs between Emraan and Soha are so identifiable. The 'Dil Ibaadat' song in particular completely moves you. But how one wishes the film would've focussed more on the characters' attempts to escape or cope with the disaster or its aftermath.

Pritam's music is melodious to the core. The cinematography does justice to the beauty of South Africa [romantic portions] and also during the flood sequences. But the usage of stock footage, at places, doesn't work. The computer graphics could've been better and more effective.

Emraan takes giant strides as an actor. He continues to surprise in film after film. Grossly under-rated despite having delivered competent performances in the past, here's hoping that people wake up to this talented actor after Tum Mile. Like Emraan, Soha too has evolved into a truly fine actor and Tum Mile proves it. The best part is, Soha is extremely natural and that's what makes her sequences so believable. Sachin Khedekar is there for just one sequence. Mantra, as Emraan's friend, is confident.

On the whole, Tum Mile caters to the youth mainly. At the box-office, the Vishesh Films - Emraan Hashmi combo has cultivated a strong fan-base over the years and coupled with good music, which is also very popular, the film should find itself in the comfortable zone. However, the super-strong opposition in 2012 [also highlighting a disaster on celluloid and which has had a wide release in India] might eat into its business at places

"Tum Mile is not 'Raj - Rahul' cinema" - Emraan Hashmi
Saturday, November 14, 2009, 12:29

In his 6 years long career so far, Emraan Hashmi is yet to be seen in a conventional Bollywood cinema where the leading man is all correct and proper with a clean heart and no grey shades. Revelling in the kind of roles that he has picked for himself, Emraan has broken quite a few stereotypes and created his own place under the sun. He may still be awaiting his 50 crore hit, something which is pretty much a benchmark for any leading man to break into the top bracket today. However, Emraan is content that he is at least trying not to follow any conventional or tried and tested trends and is giving something new to the audience in each of his films. Emraan gets into a conversation with us and explains what makes his films different.

A Bollywood disaster movie - another first for you Emraan?
It's a misconception that Tum Mile belongs to disaster movie genre. No, it is not. The Mumbai floods disaster is an integral part of the film's plot, yes. But that doesn't necessarily make the entire movie revolve around this single thread. There is so much more to Tum Mile. In fact the way I look at the film, it is mainly a love story with a disaster just acting as a catalyst to bring the two characters together. However, never once during the entire sequence of events would you miss the love between these two characters.

From the promos though it appears that it is quite a turbulent relationship between the characters played by you and Soha. Moreover, one can sense that it's not a sweet, simple and soft romantic hero that we would see in Tum Mile.
Well, if you are looking at a Raj and Rahul cinema here then Tum Mile is obviously not the one. The character I play is also much more real than a Raj or a Rahul that we have been exposed to. Instead of living in palatial mansions, this guy could be someone who lives next door. Tum Mile shows the times and tribulations in his life.

Can you elaborate further?
This guy is someone who is very real, very today. He is someone who has been quite ambitious in his life but has lost his way. He is still trying to find himself and still groping with the break in relationship with his girl (Soha Ali Khan) with whom he was so much in love at one point of time. Having said that, my chemistry with Soha shows in the film. The character that I play is my most romantic ever.

Seems like it must have been a cakewalk for you?
On the contrary it was quite a tiring experience, both physically and mentally. This was mainly because of the flood situation that had to be recreated. It was a difficult film to be made and hats off to Kunal (Deshmukh) for making it happen. During shooting, everyone from cast and crew used to stand in waist deep water for hours at stretch to give that perfect shot. When I saw the film, I was like 'Wow man, how did we actually accomplish it all?!' Credit must also go to the special effects guys who have done a brilliant job for the entire recreation

Kunal says that the unfolding of proceedings is kept quite real...
That's right. Every romance comes with a share of problems and the one here isn't any different. One has to live up to the challenges. It's situations like these that make this guy real and also makes the viewer out there feel that something like this could happen to him as well.

Pairing of Soha along with you has also raised quite a few eyebrows. It's quite unconventional after all?
Well, if people feel so then it means that we have succeeded in our endeavour (smiles). Yes, we are shown as complete opposites on screen and for that to happen, we wanted to have the right actors. Everyone felt that Soha fitted in the bill while knowing pretty well throughout that I and her coming together would be quite unconventional. Also, the way it has turned out on screen, I am sure it is this very unpredictability around the pairing that would work in the film's favour.

But can one take grey shades away from Emraan?
It's a welcome change to have absolutely no grey shades in my character this time around (laughs). In the past, I have played quite a lot of grey roles that have been liked by the audience. However, this one is completely white. Kunal told me that Tum Mile would take me to a next level. He had quite a few pointers to validate his claim. If not for him, I would have continued playing the kind of roles I have been successful in. Today when I look at the film in retrospect, I see where he was coming from. Working in Tum Mile has broadened my approach

Emraan Hashmi was in touch with Headley?
Wednesday, November 18, 2009, 17:40

Bollywood filmmaker Mahesh Bhat has always been a staunch opposer of terrorism. He has often raised his voice against terrorism whenever there have been attacks. Now NIA has found that his son Rahul Bhat and nephew Emraan Hashmi were in touch with David Coleman Headley, who allegedly plotted terror attacks in India and Denmark.

Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi said to be in touch with Headley and the investigators are looking to probe that link. They have found phone records that link Emraan Hashmi to Headley, reports CNN-IBN. It is said that Rahul Bhatt introduced Emraan to Headley, after which they met up twice, including once on the sets of Hashmi's latest film Tum Mile.

Rahul Bhatt told investigators that Hashmi and Headley have been in touch. Meanwhile, it is said that Rahul Bhatt is not a suspect and that he is being treated as a witness in the case. Rahul has even told that he took Headley to meet two Bollywood actresses, but sources have refused to name these actresses.

However, the NIA team has been in Mumbai since Saturday and is gathering details pertaining to the activities of Headley and Tahawwur Hussain Rana. The NIA has recorded the statements of those who were in touch with Headley during his stay in the city. Rahul Bhatt and the other three are fully cooperating with the police and NIA.

Hashmi in Bhardwaj’s next

The filmmaker will be making a super natural musical titled Dayaan with Ekta Kapoor

Posted On Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 03:48:02 AM

Ekta Kapoor and Vishal Bhardwaj will come together for the first time to make a super natural musical titled Dayaan. Helping them out as the creative producer for the film will be Abhishek Chaubey of Ishqiya fame.

This film will have yet another first time liaison. Emraan Hashmi will be the new Vishal Bhardwaj hero and will be seen romancing not one but three leading ladies in the film.

Our source informed, “It is going to be a thriller with super natural elements in it. It’s a new genre for Indian cinema. The interesting part is that Abhishek Chaubey has also signed on as the creative producer for the film. And with Vishal, the film is bound to be a musical.”

Talking about the leading women, our source revealed that it was Rani Mukerji who was being considered for the film. “However, Rani would have looked a bit older opposite Emraan.

So the filmmakers are now thinking of casting three young but established heroines. Since the female roles are very vital and performance oriented, they are looking at some performers,” added the source.

When contacted, Ekta confirmed the same and added, “Yes, Vishal and I are planning a drama with a breakthrough genre.

It will be replete with thrills, chartbusting music and supernatural elements. Three young and happening girls will be cast opposite Emraan.”

The project is estimated to go on the floors this November.

Emraan Hashmi in Pakistani's small screen
IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, November 16, 2011]

Emraan Hashmi's massive fan following just got dizzier...

Hum TV, a leading Pakistani television channel, recently started a prime time (8pm) show, 'Mein Tum Aur Imran Hashmi'.

Emraan's name has been incorrectly spelled, presumably to evade copyright issues. However, on watching the show it is evident that the producers are keen to capitalise on Emraan Hashmi's popularity.

Featuring popular television actors Noor Ul Hassan, Neelum Munir, Rubina Ashraf and Tipu Shah, the serial is about Chanda, who is infatuated with Emraan Hashmi. She watches, hears and hums Hashmi's hit songs all day from his hits - 'Jannat', 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne', 'Zeher' and 'Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai'. She even has his picture framed on the wall, much to the dismay of her prospective suitors.

With the release of 'The Dirty Picture' on December 2, it is believed that the producers of 'Mein Tum Aur Imran Hashmi' are even planning to incorporate in the serial, "Ishq Sufiyana", Emraan's latest hit number with Vidya Balan. 'The Dirty Picture' will release theatrically in Pakistan on the same day, that is, on 2nd December 2011.

Incidentally, this is the second time that a television show has been named after an actor, the first being 'Kya Meri Shaadi Shah Rukh Se Hogi?' on Geo TV.

Emraan Hashmi cast in Ghanchakkar

Posted On Monday, December 12, 2011 at 02:28:49 AM

UTV Motion Pictures have been chalking out their third consecutive collaboration with director Rajkumar Gupta for some time now. And after their two thrillers - Aamir and No One Killed Jessica, the filmmakers had decided to make a more light-hearted film with the comedy Ghanchakkar. However, finding the male lead was reportedly quite a challenge.

The industry was abuzz with speculation about the possible contenders and those included Saif Ali Khan, Abhishek Bachchan and Emraan Hashmi. But, all the rumours can be put to rest, as Mumbai Mirror has learnt that Emraan has finally been zeroed down for the role in the film. Apparently, this will be the first UTV venture for the former Bhatt camp loyalist.

When contacted, UTV CEO Siddarth Roy Kapoor confirmed the news and said, “After two back to back hits with Aamir and No One Killed Jessica we are thrilled to announce Ghanchakkar, our next film with Rajkumar Gupta. What makes this even more exciting is that we will be working with Emraan Hashmi for the first time. Rajkumar and Parvez Sheikh have written the script and Emraan's character will be unlike any other role he has ever essayed in the past.”

With regard to the script, director Rajkumar Gupta said, “Ghanchakkar is a quasi-realistic urban comedy, thriller highlighting the absurdity of certain real human situations.”

Emraan told us that he decided to get on-board as he found the script very “edgy and gripping and at the same time extremely commercial”. He explained, “Rajkumar has made very daring and bold films. When he narrated Ghanchakkar to me, I was very impressed.”

Most of the Hindi films are not great quality: Emraan Hashmi

Posted On Friday, January 20, 2012 at 02:15:44 PM

Emraan Anwar Hashmi is quite unlike the sexy, bad boy image he portrays on screen! In real, he sounds straightforward about his career, unapologetic about his confidence. The whole world keeps asking him about his sexy, bay boy, serial-kisser image and whether any image-change is in order. But he feels blessed that he has uncle Mahesh Bhatt.

The actor who has a Muslim father and a Catholic mother belongs to Bombay and is amazed that even after doing so many films with intimate scenes, they are still hyped and given a shock value. "I think our masses will never come to terms with intimate scenes however, well or professionally they are shown. We can never have the kind-of-attitude west has?" Emraan feels Bollywood follows the herd mentality. So when you quiz him on the quality of films he surprises us when he says that he never watches films, which does not feature him. "Doesn't it sound like asking the mirror, how good I am," he laughs. "Most of the films made in the industry are trash. So I don't remember, which film I last watched?"

Emraan is eligible yet to receive a number of indecent proposals. "I am not saying anything, they can't even go on record, they are so indecent." On a parting note we ask him about his co-stars taking the credit for his films, someone like a Mallika Sherawat? "Success of a film is team effort so if some actor wants to be delusional and blabber around, what can I do," he signs off.

Emraan Hashmi is happy for Vidya

Posted On Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 02:12:04 PM

The award season this year has seen a clean sweep by Vidya Balan. And while accolades and awards come her way, Vidya's co-star from The Dirty Picture Emraan Hashmi is extremely happy for the actor.

"All of us know that Vidya has worked really hard for her role as Silk in the movie. She had to put on weight, do those raunchy dance numbers and a lot of other stuff. I'm really happy that she is being recognized for the role," says Emraan who plays a director in the movie. "And kudos to Ekta Kapoor for making a film like this and Milan (Luthria) for directing it so sensitively," he added. The actor has recently finished shooting for Dibakar Banerjee's forthcoming film, Shanghai. "Working with Dibakar is such a pleasure. He is one of those directors who knows exactly what he wants from his actors and film. I play a gross, tobacco chewing, foul-mouthed mid-town guy who is a journalist for a small newspaper by day, a cameraman during weddings and cheap, porn movie maker by night. It was tough, but thanks to Dibakar's faith in me, I managed to pull it off," laughs Emraan. While the actor has broken out of the Bhatt camp and signed on films by other banners, the biggest news to do the rounds was that Emraan has signed a Yashraj film. But the actor denies such rumors. "Yes, I'm doing a lot of films outside the Bhatt banner. But I have definitely not signed on a Yashraj movie. If I did, there would be an announcement," clarifies the star.

Hashmi offered YRF’s next

Posted On Thursday, March 01, 2012 at 02:31:05 AM

The Dirty Picture got Vidya Balan a lot of glittering awards. As for Emraan Hashmi, the film brought in offers from the biggest production houses in the Hindi cinema industry. Emraan, who has reportedly been roped in for Karan Johar's production to be directed by Rensil D'Silva, has now signed a film with Yash Raj Films, reveal industry insiders.

According to the source, Emraan Hashmi has been roped in for YRF's next, to be directed by Parmeet Sethi, who had earlier made Badmaash Company with the production house.

Emraan is currently shooting for Vikram Bhatt's Raaz 3. And though the formalities of the YRF venture are still underway, Emraan is apparently quite excited about his role.

YRF spokesperson denied that Emraan was a part of the film and simply said, "Parmeet is still scripting the project."

‘I don’t want awards’

Emraan Hashmi, who has reportedly signed films with two of the biggest production houses of the Hindi film industry, Yash Raj Films and Dharma Productions, refused to reveal anything about his future projects with the big companies. He simply said, "When there's a formal announcement, I will be in a position to say something," and added, "I have always looked up to both the production houses. They have made some cult films."

And though films have always fascinated him, film awards haven't. Talking about his co-star Vidya Balan sweeping all the awards for The Dirty Picture, Emraan simply said that he is happy for her. "I don't want awards. I am not saying this like it's a case of sour grapes. It isn't. I have been to a couple of award functions and I soon realised that it doesn't give me the kick that it does to others," he added.

His no award formula has worked. Women swoon over his rough and tough look. He attributes it to his 'Lazy shaving schedule'. His films have also been musical successes. And that, Emraan attributes to his music directors admitting that he doesn't listen to the songs himself. "I like progressive trance. It's ironic actually, I don't like popular music and my music always becomes popular," he laughs.

While Emraan may want to dismiss his success formule, certain things will always remain with the actor. His 'serial kisser' tag for instance. "It will haunt me till the day I die," agrees the actor. The dark and negative characters that Emraan has been best known for are however, a matter of choice.

And Emraan tries his best to make his characters look real. For his role of a jounralist in the late Shamin Desai's Raftaar 24x7 that is now being completed by the filmmaker's widow Priyanka and has been renamed Rush, Emraan has been observing the media. "I found a journalist's life tough. I play an investigative crime journo in a news channel," he adds.

I saw a lot of porn: Emraan
Suruchi Sharma, TNN | Jun 6, 2012, 12.00AM IST

That's how, says Emraan Hashmi, he prepared for his role in his upcoming movie

When asked we spoke to Emraan Hashmi at an event in Delhi, we asked him what sort of preparation he did for his role in the upcoming Dibakar Banerjee flick. Emraan said that "He watched a lot of porn." He also revealed how Dibakar convinced him to become Jogi Parmar (his character in the film). He said, "Dibakar told me that my role will be that of a small time journalist, who even shoots small porn films to earn a living. He told me, 'Yeh sab jo role play kiya hai tumne apni har movie mein camera ke samne, ab camera ke peeche yeh sab shoot karna hai.' He actually made me graduate with this character. Also in this movie, he has made me run after the girl. Har picture mein ladkiyan mere peeche bhaagti hain, lekin iss film mein main Kalki ke peeche bhaag raha hoon."

Emraan, who has completely changed his looks for the movie, said that his character, Jogi, is so ugly that if he had come dressed as a character, people would have got scared. "Yahan jitne log baithe hai, sab bhaag jaate, had I come in my Jogi Parmar get-up," laughed Emraan.

And as for signing his first U certificate film, he had this to say: "I actually wanted to do a saaf-suthra film as many would call it, for my son, who is just two years old. I'd want my son to see at least one film of mine before he turns 18, which he can't right now. So I'm happy to have signed a U film," said Emraan, who has recently signed "Ek Thi Daayan" which will be co-produced by Vishal Bhardwaj and Ekta Kapoor.

Emraan Hashmi talks about his journey from Footpath to Shanghai and rise from formula to creative fulfilment

Days before Shanghai’s release, Emraan Hashmi had to cancel his tickets to the the IIFA awards at Singapore. The last thing this actor, at the cusp of stardom and art, was expecting to be held up by was a stomach flu.

At his expansive Pali Hill residence, Emraan, in a checked shirt and flat-front khakis, lounges in the hall that’s flush with sunshine and breeze. “I must have eaten something nasty at Kanpur or Lucknow where I had gone to promote Shanghai. I really wanted to be with Dibakar Banerjee and my co-stars at a platform like IIFA,” he says.

Away from the arc lights, Emraan is the antithesis of his ‘filmi’ screen image. He has had a silent surge, first as a mass hero, then as a bankable star, and now an ‘A-lister’, who is starring in a Karan Johar film as well as a Vishal Bhardwaj venture.

In most of his 25 films thus far, the majority of which have been super-hit potboilers, the 33-year-old has played grey, troubled characters that get away with swindling, killing, betraying people and, of course, kissing girls and getting luckier than that too.

From Footpath, Murder, Gangster, Awarapan, Jannat, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai to his disarmingly sincere performance as Jogi Parmar in Shanghai, Emi (pronounced Immy) has coursed the long mile.

The only thing that has remained unchanged in his career is the signature lip-synced hit song. He talks about what changed, and what didn’t.

Considering your repertoire, Shanghai may end up being the only film your two-year-old son Ayaan can see a few years from now.

Yes, I can’t show him anything else. Even for Shanghai, he’ll have to turn 18 to understand it. By then, Mumbai would have hopefully become Shanghai…or maybe not.

Why did you feel the need to step out of your comfort zone?

I always aspired for a departure from being the mainstream hero. But I couldn’t find anybody who could do this for me without turning it into caricature. Dibakar Banerjee keeps it very natural, so this seemed perfect.

Also, I feel most of our actors are smug and narcissistic. Very few want to step out of their comfort zone. They think they do but they are still boxed in and airbrushed. Christian Bale does Batman and American Psycho, and still manages to look like a Crystal Meth addict in The Fighter and lose 30 kgs for The Machinist. Now that’s a real actor.

What does Shanghai mean to you?

Shanghai is a film I am extremely proud of. It has taken the life out of me to get inside Jogi’s skin. I have never done anything like this before, content in my cool, urbanised, aloof characters. Jogi has an inferiority complex but he masks it with an overt sense of bravado. I may have met somebody like Jogi but I wouldn’t understand him. Dibakar recommended I undergo these 12 painfully grilling theatre workshops with Atul Mongia for the role, which I did.

Jogi throws open a dimension of me that three months ago people may have never thought existed. Shanghai tells the audience: Look, he can do this. That said, Jannat 2 is as important as Shanghai. But an actor wants his other facets to be understood as well.

I know that 90 per cent of our industry would want Shanghai to fail. That’s because they don’t have the balls to step out and make a Shanghai. I have been here nine years to understand how an out-of-the-box film that challenges Bollywood’s conventions gets run down by its own people.

Two common complaints people have against you: a) You got lucky because of the Bhatts. b) You look nothing like a hero.

Both these grouses are true. It’s not exactly a revelation that Mahesh Bhatt has always backed me. If it wasn’t for him, I probably wouldn’t be in films. But you can’t hold that against me. It was an inroad but it couldn’t have guaranteed success.

Many star kids give their best shot, but if the audience doesn’t embrace you, there’s no place for you. The Bhatts have been protective of me when I have signed films outside their banner. But they understand I need to do my thing too.

As for my looks, if I didn’t look the way I do, I would probably be one of those many faces doing a romcom which I detest. The way I look has somewhere defined the characters I played. My weakness has become my strength.

What do you think Bhatt saw in you?

I have no idea. My grandmother Purnima Verma was an actress. Maybe he thought I had inherited her genes. She would say I should stick to being the second hero or a side actor.

My family was concerned because I had nothing going for me in the looks department. They didn’t want me to be hurt if I failed. I wasn’t alien to the camera though.

As a child, I had done around 20 ads. I was seven when I did a Goodnight ad and got my first pay cheque of Rs 2,500. I had the face that went well with brands such as Rasna.

Was learning to act tough?

I was always plagued with self-doubt. When I went to Satyadev Dubey’s acting class, I was shocked to find how acting was being taught - 25 students facing a wall would recite a Sanskrit monologue for hours on end.

You would graduate by picking another wall and continuing to recite. I did it for a day or two and then went, ‘Okay, this is probably not my scene’ (laughs). Eventually, I went to Dubey sir’s house and learnt a few basics. Then I was trained for a while by Roshan Taneja.

Amisha Patel once told Bhatt, “This boy can’t act.” The first day of Footpath’s shoot was at Mukesh Mills and my career’s first take was a wide angle shot of me walking out of a drug deal and throwing a dialogue at Aftab Shivdasani. My family was cheering, the unit was clapping…pedhe bhi batt gaye thhe. But I couldn’t say the dialogue. I froze and remembered all the people who said I didn’t have it in me. My family felt so awkward that they left dismayed. Bhatt sahab thought this guy is really f***ing up, so he left. Forty-five retakes later, the shot still wasn’t canned and the unit packed up. I was devastated. As I was about to leave, a lightman told me, "Hota hai…sab ke saath hota hai. Kal dekho, theek ho jaayega."

I didn’t sleep that night. Never have I recited one line as many times as I did that night. I can never forget it: Batti band kar. Agar battery down ho jaayegi toh koi dhakka maarnewala aayega nahi.

The following day, the first take worked. Footpath began and so did my journey in movies.

How do you think your career has panned out?

I feel content. Bhatt or Vishesh films wrote my films keeping my strengths and weaknesses in mind. I was happy to do what I was told. Bollywood had never explored erotic thrillers. Murder, which definitely marked the onset of bold cinema, was my first brush with box office success.

An Emraan Hashmi film has come to guarantee certain ingredients: An intense, grey central character, a beautiful girl, if he gets lucky then two (smiles), couple of kisses, a few bold scenes, fabulous music and a climatic twist.

My dreams then were anybody’s - buy a car, a house, gift something nice to my girlfriend. I wasn’t mature enough to see the bigger picture of creativity.

Don’t your intimate scenes upset your wife Parveen?

I don’t think any wife would be fine seeing her husband do that. But then it’s my profession, right? Our fights over this haven’t yet reached the dramatic levels of chucking vases at each other. But yes, I definitely experience the agonising pain of her fingernails digging into the back of my palm while watching a film’s premiere. I prefer to deal with her abuses on the night of the screening than tackle it through the six months of shooting.

Hasn’t she asked you why you must have a kissing or make-out scene in every movie?

Of course she has; and so has my family. But everybody understands that it’s an ingredient in my films. Bollywood likes repeating formula because it works. It was shocking for her and my family when I was publicised as a serial kisser.

They took time to digest the fact that the kissing scene had become a norm, a part of my persona. Parveen understands it but says, you are a good actor…you don’t need to do this. But if I try and be a clean romantic hero, I would be terrible.

And the scenes would need multiple takes?

The kissing scenes get done in four or five takes (pauses). But yeah, even that’s a lot (smiles). At first it was nerve-wracking. During Murder, I would tell everybody to be upbeat and confident but I was nervous as hell because, after all, it’s a personal thing that you are shooting for the big screen.
