| Juhi Chawla: Madhuri Dixit and I were arch rivals for many years!

Actor Juhi Chawla, who is sharing the screen space with her once arch rival Madhuri Dixit for the first time in Gulaab Gang, calls the dhak dhak girl her one of the best co-stars so far
Loosely based on Uttar-Pradesh based Sampat Pal’s ‘Gulabi Gang’, which works for the women’s betterment, Gulaab Gang features Madhuri in the main lead, and Juhi in a negative role.
“I enjoyed working in Gulaab Gang because I was working with Madhuri in the film. First time we shot the scenes with each other,” said Juhi during the wrap-up party of the film. “I think she (Madhuri Dixit) has been one of my best co-stars,” Juhi added.
Juhi made her acting debut in 1986 with Sultanat, while Madhuri started acting with 1984 film Abodh. But both the actors had their first commercial hits in 1988 – Juhi made it big with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, while Madhuri rocked the nation with her Ek do teen number in Tezaab.
Post that, both gave many hits – If Juhi’s Oeuvre boasts of films like Darr, Yes Boss, Deewana Mastana, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Bol Radha Bol and Ishq, Madhuri gave blockbusters like Dil, Saajan, Beta, Ram Lakhan, Dil To Pagal Hai and Devdas. Recalling the time of their rivalry, Juhi said: “There was a time when we were arch rivals and that rivalry remained for many years. We used to talk little bit. Whenever we met at any function or on the set of the film…just said ‘hello’ and moved ahead,” said the 46-year-old.
But now, putting all the rivalry aside, Juhi is really looking forward to Gulaab Gang. “After so many years, we both have got an opportunity to work together in a film. Besides, when I accepted that the script is very strong and she (Madhuri) is the hero and I am the villain in the film, it became very easy to work in the film,” Juhi said.
Co-produced by Anubhav Sinha and Abhinay Deo, Gulaab Gang has been directed by debutante Soumik Sen. Crediting Soumik for breaking the ice between her and Madhuri, Juhi said: “Soumik did one of the best things. He called the whole gang (team) of the film and read out the script. Before the shooting of the film, he called me and Madhuri in his office and said, ‘You people talk about anything, whatever you want to’. So, that was an ‘ice breaker’ (between me and Madhuri) before going on the set,” Juhi recalled.

| Juhi Chawla is face of SONY PAL

Actress Juhi Chawla has been appointed as the face of Multi Screen Media's new Hindi general entertainment channel SONY PAL, which will begin by offering a line-up of nine different shows, bringing alive the theme 'Yeh Pal Hamara Hai'.
The channel, slated to go on air Sep 1, promises to resonate with the ethos of the traditional yet modern Indian woman.
"SONY PAL will present an eclectic mix of shows with empowering stories and identifiable characters that will have universal appeal," N.P. Singh, CEO, Multi Screen Media Private Limited, said in a statement.
The channel aims to celebrate how today's woman has achieved a sense of social and economic evolution while striking a chord between household chores and a self-identity, explained Anooj Kapoor, senior executive vice president and business head, SONY PAL and SAB TV.
The line-up includes a first-of-its-kind chat show, "Simply Baatein with Raveena". To be anchored by Raveena Tandon, it will be a an interactive chat show where the host will address issues under a collective umbrella of 'womanhood' with fun, frolic and expert advice from celebrated personalities of their selective fields.
A game show "Dil Hain Chotasa Choti Si Asha" will feature women contestants who will bring to fore their emotional and inspiring stories. It will be hosted by Ragini Khanna and Jay Soni.
Some element of drama will be brought in by "Ek Rishta Aisa Bhi", a story about the relationship between a 'Jijaa-Saali' (brother-in-law and sister-in-law).
"Khushiyon Ki Gullakh Aashi", another show, will trace the journey of a cheerful, jolly yet dejected Aashi whose life is spent in the yen to grow with parental love, and she adopts parents.
There is also a period drama titled "Singhasan Battisi", based on the story of the throne of Raja Vikramaditya with 32 angel statues. Anchored by Sayantani Ghosh, each episode will present a unique collection of these ancient tales.
A show titled "Pia Basanti Re" will chronicle the life story of a modest girl Pia, who believes that status and class come not from wealth but through capability and attitude.
The channel will also have the story of a mother and daughter in "Tum Sath Ho Jaab Apne", while "Sister Didi" will narrate the story of a lady who becomes the head nurse at a hospital and helps to heal patients with love and affection apart from medicine.
How can a love story be left out? "Yeh Dil Sun Raha Hain", set in Bihar, will chart the struggle of young lovers who fight against all odds and family opposition to unite with each other.

| Juhi Chawla: 'Darr' can't be remade

As audience gets ready for web reboot of superstar Shah Rukh Khan's 1993 hit "Darr", Juhi Chawla, the leading lady of the original film, says it is not possible to remake the movie.
Late filmmaker Yash Chopra's psychological thriller was about an obsessive lover Rahul (SRK), who creates havoc in the lives of Kiran (Juhi) and Sunil (Sunny Deol).
"Darr 2.0", backed by a YRF offshoot, will feature the three main characters in an entirely new milieu, weaved in a modern, original tale of obsession and fear in the age of cyber stalking and digital crimes.
When asked about it, Juhi told reporters here, "That (reboot) is not 'Darr'. It might be inspired or have similarities to the original but it's not 'Darr'. Such films don't get remakes, people just get inspired by them to make something."
The five-part web series aims to hold a mirror to the perilous environment of online privacy invasion and social media harassment that can take a dangerous and disturbing turn, if unchecked.
It has been directed by Vikas Chandra, who was an associate creative producer on YRF's "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy".

| Juhi Chawla slams item songs for commercialisation of women

Kolkata: Actress Juhi Chawla yesterday blasted item numbers for commericialising the beauty of women.
The actress, who was one of prominent leading ladies of Bollywood in 90s, said during her career even she had to be a part of songs with vulgar lyrics.
At a discussion on women empowerment, Juhi mentioned popular item numbers like "Munni Badnam Hui" and "Chikni Chameli" questioning their relevance.
"Are we listening to the lyrics? These lyrics were written by men and not women. Should we be listening to these songs? Should we be allowing it?" Juhi asked addressing the issue of commercialisation of women in the Hindi film industry.
She also hit out at the media saying when people voice against such songs, journalists start talking about freedom of speech and expression.
"Even I had to do one or two such songs. Do you think I was happy doing that? When I was dancing to 'Jab Tak Rahega Samose mein aalu....' do you think I was enjoying it?" the actress said.
The actress said dancing to such songs was a part of her work and being the only woman on set it was tough for to her raise voice.
During her speech, Chawla also stressed on the need to bring Sanskrit back into vogue for the new generation.
