Она вошла в спальню, чтобы надеть платье к празднику, и увидела на кровати спящего незнакомца! Осенью Болливуд выпускает в прокат комедию I love NY («Я люблю Новый год»), повторяющую сюжет нашей «Иронии судьбы» с точностью до мелочей. «О русском фильме ничего не знаю, – уверяет «СтарХит» звезда боевиков, 54-летний актер Санни Деол, играющий индийского Женю Лукашина. – Я определенно хотел бы его посмотреть! Особенно удивлен, что у вас действие тоже начинается в сауне…»
Герой Санни – банкир, который собрался отпраздновать Новый год в Чикаго, где он живет. Но прежде вместе с друзьями в сауне поднимает бесконечные тосты, танцует и поет. Потом его, бесчувственного, усаживают в самолет – и он приходит в себя только в квартире нью-йоркской красавицы певицы, ее играет 26-летняя Кангана Ранаут. «Прошедший день он не может вспомнить. А наступающую ночь не забудет никогда», – говорится в рекламе картины.
В титрах трейлера, вышедшего в конце июля, упоминаний о режиссере Эльдаре Рязанове и сценаристе Эмиле Брагинском нет. Рязанов ничего не знает об индийской версии. Но «русский след» все-таки нашелся. Режиссеры I love NY Радхика Pao и Винэй Сапру не раз бывали в нашей стране. В 2005 году на экраны вышел их фильм «Лаки. Не время для любви», который снимали в Санкт-Петербурге – на фоне набережных, дворцов и даже «Авроры». Киногруппа работала в России и летом, и зимой – накануне Нового года…

История: Это случилось 31 декабря! Рандхир (Санни Деол), банкир и солидный человек, который живет в Чикаго, планирует всё-таки воплотить в жизнь затянувшуюся историю с повторным браком и сделать предложение своей подруге. Но когда он - для храбрости - выпивает с друзьями, то не рассчитав, напивается, и вместо одного из друзей оказывается на борту самолета летящего в Нью-Йорк. Он просыпается в Нью-Йорке, и, приняв его за Чикаго, ловит такси, чтобы поскорее вернуться домой. По прибытии, не сразу, он понимает, что находится не в своем доме, не с отцом, и, конечно, не в Чикаго. Он оказывается в доме Tikku, девушки, чей адрес в Нью-Йорке тот же, что и его адрес в Чикаго. Что это - просто случай? Или Судьба имеет несколько другие планы относительно этих двух в новогоднюю ночь?
Актерские работы: Санни Деол блистает. Он предстает в совершенно другом образе, не в привычном облике сурового человека, один лишь вид которого достаточен, чтоб напугать врагов и грозно кричащего во весь голос. Здесь он простой, очаровательный и спокойный человек. Это наслаждение - видеть Деола, использующего совершенно другой язык тела и стиль актерской игры. Он смотрится тем самым, очень естественным, каким мы любили его в течение многих лет! Что касается Канганы Ранаут, то она выглядит великолепно, но она получила роль, где все, что она должна делать, это слушать истерики своего приятеля, смотреть на Санни Деола и проливать слезы, ходить и плакать. Да, безусловно, это не то, что кто-то будет ожидать от нее после "Queen" и "Tanu Weds Manu Returns", где её роли куда значительнее. Не то чтобы персонажу Деола придается большее значение, но он явно затмевает ее - будь то результат режиссуры или его актерская мудрость в роли. Неудивительно, что Кангана была против выхода этого фильма после столь долгой задержки.
Чистое наслаждение - смотреть на Према Чопру. Он играет небольшую, но значительную роль поддерживающего и заботливого отца персонажа Санни Деола.
Навин Чаудри делает всё лучшее, что он может. Но бедному парню выпала роль, состоящая в том, чтобы приходить и кричать на Кангану и Санни снова и снова. Тут трудно удержаться от раздражения.
Режиссура: Этот фильм поднимает престиж режиссеров Радхики Рао и Виная Сапру. Они легко могли бы придать ему чисто зрелищный и приторно-романтической уклон, но не делают этого. Плюс, используя историю, разворачивающуюся в Штатах, они могли бы выбрать в качестве персонажей клише отношений супер-пенждабца и девушки из мусульманской семьи, но они этого не делают. Режиссура очень аккуратная и лирическая, романтические сцены удачные. В сюжете фильма действительно есть много недостатков, но хорошая режиссерская работа нивелирует их. Например: аудиторию, как правило, не убеждает любовь между героями, возникшая в течение нескольких дней знакомства, но в "Я люблю Новый Год" / "I Love NY", романтические отношения выглядят достаточно убедительно, хотя все события в фильме крутится вокруг одной ночи!
Тем не менее, самый большой недостаток фильма в том, что история растянута, это время от времени испытывает терпение зрителей на прочность. Но в целом, фильм преуспевает в том, чтобы донести до зрителей то, что было заложено.
Вердикт: фильм понесет потери из-за малой рекламы и выпуска параллельно с ''Bahubali"Карана Джохара. Если вы твердолобый киноман-романтик и уже видели/не хотите видеть "Bahubali", то этот фильм для вас!

There were reports that Kangana Ranaut didn’t want I Love NY (New Year) to be released, but now after watching the film, it seems her worries were mostly fictional. In fact, she is the one you’ll noticce the most in the film, and she doesn’t disappoint either. I Love NY is much better than its run-of-the-mill trailers, but how good is actually good enough? Let’s find out.
The film starts with a commentary in Randhir Singh’s (Sunny Deol) voice which is basically an exercise to make the ‘desi’ audience familiar with the popular American outlook. It’s just that the film has been released after being canned for some years and thus the Indian viewers have become used to such cultural and behavioural differences via other Hindi films.
Randhir Singh is a guy from Chicago who accidentally reaches New York.
Anyway, we get to know that our guy Randhir is a hard working, coffee drinking guy whose last marriage proposal was dated 10 years ago, and now he is gathering courage to pop-up the same question to his current girlfriend Riya (Tannishtha).
The really long gap between the two proposals is necessary otherwise how will the filmmakers justify a 57-year-old hero to the Indian audience? Of course, pun intended. He chooses the New Year Eve to get the long pending work done, but a series of mistakes and coincidences brings him to New York (you get the NY drift?), where he meets a school teacher Tikku Verma (Kangana Ranaut), described as the president of unlucky club by her boyfriend Ishaan (Navin Chowdhary). This ‘chance’ encounter is the actual beginning of a story which can at least boast of sensible dialogues.

A basic initiation is needed before we delve deeper into the nitty-gritties of a ‘why did you happen to me’ sort of tale in New York. In case, you don't have any direct reference to American pop culture then you can also consider Friends as a source of information. There things like handing over the keys of your apartment to somebody you’re dating is considered as the penultimate step towards getting married. In a nutshell, New York is a city which is a great mixture of traditional and modern. In such a city, Ishaan finds a ‘gharelu ladki’ who he accuses of being the ‘titli’ type.
A girl who wants to be happy even at the darkest point of her life is at the helm of affairs, but her back-story has been presented in a very ordinary way. Tikku’s Monica-like apartment may hint towards a modern outlook, but the letters from her dead father which she keeps reading at every possible opportunity present her as the conscience keeper of the semi-urban Indian women.
But, there’s a tinge of a feminist in her character which manages to make Tikku Verma a girl to root for. The directors (Radhika and Vinay) have taken the utmost care in representing their characters in the typical western way which brings a sense of equality between opposite genders.
Kangana has come up with a good performance in I Love NY.
It's not an attempt to imply that we’re incapable of doing the same, but American shows and films have stronger female characters. And, this is what I like the most about this film. Even if Ishaan uses negative connotations for Tikku, he does avoid the loud gestures we’re accustomed to. And, please be clear, I am strictly talking about the differences between the films of two separate time zones.
Randhir is also not our otherwise angry Sunny Paaji who would destroy an entire nation to save his girl. He is a cool, calm and composed guy who confesses that New York has made him ‘besharam’ (shameless), though he means it more like ‘outspoken’. Who wouldn’t love his hopping dance in the song ‘Gud naal ishq mitha’!
For once, he has come out of his comfort zone of mindless action sequences. The pairing may look a bit odd to some due to the vast age difference between the two lead actors, but 50-year-olds are also allowed to fall in love, right?
So, who'll win this battle of love?
The writing is not flawless despite good dialogues and the turn of events sometimes looks forced, but good one-to-one scene compensates for it. And then some really good songs come to the rescue. It is hard to imagine Sunny Deol in such a role but casting him wasn’t a bad idea at all, and the actor has reciprocated in his own capacity. He is not afraid to show his flabby belly and that’s a big thing to achieve as mainstream filmmakers for Radhika-Vinay. You see, this willingness to keep things normal makes I Love NY a good watch.
Yes, it appears funny when Reema Lagoo says ‘ye ladka to heera hai heera’ for Sunny Deol, but barring a few instances, he acts his age unlike other 50-something actors who’re hell bent on making 20-somethings fall for them.
I Love NY will remain in your memory, provided you are willing to watch it, as a film where Kangana Ranaut and Sunny Deol tried honestly to come up with a believable love story. Avoid pre-conceived notions, it's a film worth a try.

Popcorn Refill: Interval, or any time during the first half! Story: It’s 31st December! Randhir (Sunny Deol), who lives in Chicago, plans to give his life a new turn by getting married to his girlfriend. However, things take a turn when he and his group of friends get drunk and instead of one of his friends, Randhir boards the plane to New York while he is asleep. He wakes up in New York mistaking it for Chicago and catches a taxi to get back to his home. Upon his arrival, he realizes that he is not in his own house, not with his father, and surely not in Chicago. He is at Tiku’s place, a girl who shares the same house address with him. Is it just luck? Or destiny has some other plans for the two this New Year’s eve? Performances: Sunny Deol shines. He is seen in a completely different avatar from his usual angry-man image whose one stare is enough to scare the enemies and shouts on top of his voice. He is a simple, adorable and calm man who stands for what he believes in. It is a delight to watch Deol adapt a different body language and style of acting. He is at his natural best, the way we have loved him for years!Coming to Kangana Ranaut, she looks gorgeous, but has been given a role where all she has to do is listen to her boyfriend’s tantrums and shed tears, watch Sunny Deol fall in love with her and shed tears, walk around and cry. Yes, surely not what anyone would expect from her after ‘Queen’ and ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ where she was given more importance. Not that Deol is given more importance, but he clearly overshadows her- be it performance-wise or role-wise. No wonder she was against the release of this much-delayed film.Prem Chopra is a delight to watch. He has a small but nice role as Sunny Deol’s supportive and caring father.Navin Chowdhry does the best he can. Poor guy has just been given the role to come and shout at Kangana and Sunny time and again. Repeating him once in even half-an-hour gets irritating. Direction: Kudos to the directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru for making this movie! They could have easily given it a very entertaining and cheesy-romantic movie angle but don’t. Plus, having the story located in the States, they could have opted for a very Punjabi-styled movie with clichéd over-the-top Punjabi characters, and a royal Muslim family as the neighbors. But they don’t! The direction is very beautiful and lovely; the romantic scenes are worth remembering! They give it a sweet, silent and romantic feel to the movie.The movie’s story does have many flaws but their wonderful direction makes up for it. For example- the audience’s usually do not get convinced when the lead couple fall in love within a few days of meeting, but here, they make the love look convincing enough even though the entire movie revolves around one night!However, the biggest flaw of the movie is that it has been stretched, which keeps testing the patience of the audiences at times!Overall, they succeed in giving what they wanted to! Combo-on-Offer: Cute and romantic moments + Foot-tapping songs. Verdict: The film would suffer loss due to less publicity and releasing along with ‘Bahubali’.
