Pooja Bhatt lauds Goa DGP for special screening of 'Singham'

Agencies Posted: Sep 15, 2011 at 1222 hrs IST

SinghamBhatt said that the movie was really “a good piece of work” and Ajay Devgan was an “inspiration” to many. (Bollywood Hungama)
Appreciating Goa DGP Aditya Arya for launching an initiative for 'image makeover' of the police force by showcasing Bollywood flick 'Singham' to them, actress Pooja Bhatt said she felt proud of the gesture.

“It is something to feel satisfy about. I am basking in glory although I have not produced the film,” Bhatt told reporters on the sidelines of a press conference organised yesterday to announce the South Asian Film Festival (SAFF) beginning today.

Bhatt said that the movie was really “a good piece of work” and Ajay Devgan was an “inspiration” to many.

Arya had held a special screening of 'Singham', casting Ajay Devgan as a police protagonist, for the state police force whose image has taken a beating over a period of time owing to the allegations of sexual abuse, drug trade and dereliction of duty.

Screening 'Singham' was part of an exercise launched by the top cop, who assumed the charge recently, to inculcate discipline in the force.

Ajay produces Vishal’s film

The actor will join hands with Fox Star Studios to rope in the filmmaker before he starts work on SRK’s 2 States

Posted On Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at 03:00:49 AM

Taking his rivalry with the King Khan a step forward, Ajay Devgn has now convinced Vishal Bhardwaj to put the Shah Rukh Khan starrer 2 States on hold and start work on Devgn's Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola.

The filmmaker who was supposed to start with the Sajid Nadiadwala project based on Chetan Bhagat's novel will now go on floors with Devgn's film this November. Incidentally, the actor will also co-produce the film along with Fox Star Studios.

A source told Mumbai Mirror, "Ajay has not only convinced Vishal Bhardwaj to direct the film but also got the producers of My Name Is Khan, Fox Star Studios to co-produce the film along with him.

The film titled Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is a comedy starring Anushka Sharma opposite Ajay Devgn. Ajay wanted the film to go on floors immediately after he wraps up Rohit Shetty's Bol Bachchan. his next film Son Of Sardar will now go on floors next year."

With his Shah Rukh starrer 2 States stuck in the initial phases for a while now, Vishal Bhardwaj sounded happy to be able to move on with a project. "I have had the idea for this comedy for almost eight years now.

It's a totally new genre for me. It will be completely different from what I have done in my earlier films. Also, I have missed working with Ajay. He is a great actor and a greater human being. I can't wait to be on the sets with him."

Talking about his leading lady Anushka, Vishal added, "She is a ball of energy. The harder you throw her, the higher she will go. I am looking forward to shooting with her."

The actor and the director are not the only two people happy to have got this project rolling. Vijay Singh, the CEO of Fox Star Studios said, "Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is a very special film for us at Fox Star. It brings together some great talent - Vishal Bhardwaj, Ajay Devgn and Kumar Mangat. We believe it will draw a lot of attention in 2012."

Vishal gets his hero (finally!)

Imran Khan steps in to play lead in Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola after Ajay Devgn and Shahid Kapur opt out

Posted On Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at 02:05:13 AM

Ajay Devgn opted for Son Of Sardar over Vishal Bhardwaj's upcoming comedy. And now, the filmmaker seems to have finally found a male lead to fill in Devgn's shoes for his next Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola in Aamir Khan's nephew Imran.

Imran will rub shoulders with Anushka Sharma, who remains the leading lady in the film. Fox Star Studios and Vishal Bhardwaj are co producers of the film.

A source informed Mumbai Mirror, "Bhardwaj chose Imran. He sees great potential in him to carry off the role."

Imran Khan and Anushka Sharma are getting paired for the first time. Imran after his successful Delhi Belly and Mere Brother Ki Dulhan seems to have impressed the critically acclaimed director.

"Imran is very excited that he would be working with Bhardwaj. Imran is also happy that he would have a new leading lady, Anushka Sharma, who has not worked with him yet," added the source.

Ajay Devgn was Bhardwaj's first choice to play the male lead in Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola. While the reason behind Devgn's sudden decision to drop out of the project remains unclear, sources claim Devgn had been lured by the money Viacom 18 Motion Pictures offered him for Ashwini Dhir's project (Mumbai Mirror, October 15) According to the buzz in the industry, Bhardwaj had then approached Shahid Kapoor for the role. But Shahid declined the offer, citing date-issues (Mumbai Mirror, October 20).

Ajay and Shahid's loss seems to have become Imran's gain. When contacted, Imran Khan said, "I love the script. We are working out the details. It's an honour to be approached by a filmmaker like Vishal Bhardwaj." Bhardwaj remained unavailable for comment.

Devgn meets Anna, finally!

Despite the felicitation event in Pune being cancelled due to security reasons, the actor made sure that he met the social activist before the latter left for New Delhi

Posted On Saturday, November 05, 2011 at 02:30:12 AM

Ajay Devgn was taken aback when the felicitation ceremony in Pune was cancelled due to security reasons. However, the actor, who was supposed to be felicitated by Anna Hazare at the event, made sure that he at least met the activist before he leaves for Delhi. Devgn caught up with Anna at the airport on the latter’s way back.

A source informed Mumbai Mirror, “The Pune police wanted to felicitate Ajay Devgn for his role of a honest Marathi cop in Singham. Anna Hazare was flying down to Pune especially for the event. But while the organisers expected around three thousand people, over ten thousand turned up. In no time, the event became extremely chaotic. Entering the venue became impossible.”

“Ajay, who was travelling with Rohit Shetty and his business manager Kumar Mangat left without entering the venue. So did Anna Hazare. But Ajay wanted to meet Anna. When he learnt that Anna was heading towards the airport, Ajay rushed there and met up with the activist,” added the source.

When contacted, Kumar Mangat, confirmed the news and added, “We were very excited about meeting Anna. However, since we could not reach the venue, we decide to meet him at the airport. It was a very nice evening. Ajay was extremely happy to have finally met him.”

With mega sell, Devgn now officially a Big Gn

World rights of his next film Bol Bachchan go for Rs 94 cr, getting Ajay into Khan territory

Posted On Saturday, November 26, 2011 at 02:20:04 AM

It seems that since Ajay Devgn changed the way he spells is name, his fortunes keep getting better. The star, already bankable, cranked it up even further this week when Fox Star Studios bought the world theatrical rights of Bol Bachchan for Rs 94 crore. Trade analysts say this brings Ajay uncomfortably close on the heels of the biggies — Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman Khan.

Just 10 days ago, a Rs 53-crore deal between Ashtavinayak and Ajay Devgn and Nagpur based builder Appu Wadhwani for the remake of the 1979 rib-tickler Golmaal was called off (Mumbai Mirror, November 15). A source told Mumbai Mirror, “Naturally, they were a but disappointed. But then everything happens for the best. The deal with Fox Star Studios has fetched them Rs 41 crore more than the former arrangement. Ajay is grinning from ear to ear.”

This is the highest price that an Ajay Devgn-starrer has fetched till date. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said, “It is impressive that Bol Bachchan has fetched close to Rs 100 crore, even though the sum is for world rights. The Ajay Devgn-Rohit Shetty combination is the deciding factor for this deal.”

Listing the factors that are working in Bol Bachchan’s favour, the industry source said, “Rohit and Ajay work very well together. All three versions of Golmaal were runaway winners at the box office. Singham was a super hit. Also, Bol Bachchan has Abhishek Bachchan.”

The source added, “Fox Star Studios has been meaning to work with Ashtavinayak for a long time. They grabbed this opportunity.”

The spokesperson for Ashtavinayak and Ajay Devgn confirmed the deal.

Ajay Devgn is a friend in need
By: Hiren Kotwani Date: 2012-03-05 Place: Mumbai

Actor and Akshay Kumar seem to further seal their friendship with a new film deal

In an industry where relationships are said to be fickle, there are some in the contrary that actually overlook previous sour equations to explore newer pastures.

The fact that once-upon-a-time archrivals, Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar were ready to bury the hatchet became more obvious when Akki gladly gave away the title, Son Of Sardar to Ajay last year.

Now it is learnt that Kumar Mangat, an old associate of Ajay is co-producing Akshay's Special Chhabbis, perhaps at the behest of Ajay.

Incidentally, first it was Ajay who was roped in for Special Chhabbis. Back then Ekta Kapoor was producing the film. "However, due to prior commitments, Ajay opted out of it some time in the middle of 2011. After that, Ekta's production house too backed out of it," reveals an industry source.

And now, another source informs us despite Ajay's opting out of the film, Kumar Mangat continued to be involved in it.

"Kumarji was keen to make the film with Neeraj Pandey (the director and producer)," says our informer, adding that Mangat happened to discuss it with Viacom 18, with whom he has a good equation, having delivered a hit in Pyaar Ka Punchnama last year.

Our source further adds, "On hearing Neeraj's script, Viacom 18 decided to back it and produce it with Kumarji and Neeraj. In fact, it was the corporate house that suggested Akshay's name as the leading man. Eventually, by November 2011, Akshay had signed up for it."

About the film
Reportedly, Special Chhabbis is based on a real-life daring heist of 1987 when an unknown man posing as CBI officer Mon Singh recruited 26 men and executed a daylight raid on the Opera House branch of a well-known jeweller in Mumbai and disappeared with jewellery worth lakhs.

More horsepower for Ajay Devgn

Posted On Friday, March 30, 2012 at 04:05:03 AM

Every star has their signature strut. Rajinikanth flips his sunglasses. Shah Rukh Khan spreads his arms. And Ajay Devgn straddles two moving vehicles. In his debut film Phool Aur Kaante, he strode two bikes. In Golmaal Returns, keeping in tune with director Rohit Shetty’s fascination for them, Devgn repeated his famous action with two brightly coloured cars. And now, the actor has decided to reinterpret his famous act with two lively horses for Ashwini Dhir’s Son Of Sardar.

Mirror has found out that the filmmakers have already finalised two horses from Patiala, where the shoot has been planned. A big ground has already been booked for the sequence. The horses are being trained there. And the actor too is training with them.

On the other hand, the entire team is busy planning the sequence - figuring out how to shoot the scene without a safety harness, how to avoid scaring the animals etc - since even a single glitch could seriously injure the actor.

The scene will be directed by Jai Singh, who had been an associate of the actor’s father Veeru Devgan. He had also been the action director for all Rohit Shetty films including Golmaal, Singham, Golmaal 3 etc.

Apart from getting ready for the scene, Devgn is busy getting acquainted with the two horses. Since unlike the bikes and cars that held him the last two times, horses are living beings and have a mind of their own. This makes the stunt more challenging.

Interestingly, it is after 12 years that Devgn would do an action sequence involving horses. The last time was for his home production Raju Chacha.

Meanwhile...

Inking history

That Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn and director Rohit Shetty have got themselves inked is not news. However, for the first time, the three men made their marks public. On a special episode of a television chat show.

Interestingly, it was Dutt who had inspired Devgn to get inked while shooting for All The Best. And celeb stylist Hakim Aalim had flown down to Goa to needle the tattoo on Devgn's chest on the sets of Golmaal. And now, Devgn has a tattoo of his daughter's name Nysa and an image of Lord Shiva on his chest.

Devgn's tattoo in turn inspired his friend Rohit Shetty to get one as well. And for the first time, they showed off their marks on the TV show. Kunal M Shah

Will Ajay Devgn have a Tezz 2012?

Posted On Monday, April 02, 2012 at 06:55:11 PM

He was amongst the first few Bollywood stars to cross the 100 crore mark with his blockbuster hit Singham last year. Will Ajay Devgn reign in 2012 as well?

On his birthday today, we ask astro-numerologist Bhavikk Sangghvi to predict what the stars have in store for the bankable actor. He gets to his analysis. "Born on 2nd April 1969, Ajay is a Number 2 (Moon) person in numerology. He is also ruled by Number 9 (Mars - Aries) and Number 4 (Rahu). Being ruled by Number 2, he is also ruled by Number 7 (Ketu) as these two numbers always go hand in hand".

"Being a Number 2, Ajay is very creative and hence also a moody person. Otherwise he is soft spoken and family loving. But to the Mars effect, he is also very hyper, temperamental and aggressive when needed. That is why he is good at action and a pro at doing stunts. He likes to be adventurous but should be careful as he is also accident prone. The presence of 'Rahu' will make him indecisive and hence always in two minds most of the times".

"Ajay will be entering his 44th year now which means a slightly lean phase for the Singham star. Professionally and on the health front both", predicts Bhavikk. "His next release 'Tezz' would do just about average business at the box office compared to his past hits and so would his home production S.O.S. - Son Of Sardar. But in between, he would manage to achieve some success in 'Bol Bachchan'".

"On the health front, he needs to take extra care and should avoid unnecessary stress, tensions, worries leading to bouts of depression and loneliness. Wearing a Hessonite on his middle finger on a Saturday (two hours after sunset) would help achieve better self control, focus and direction in life", advices Bhavikk very strongly before signing off.

Ajay Devgn: I am a desi dancer

IndiaGlitz [Friday, June 08, 2012]

As Rohit Shetty's Bol Bachchan inches towards release, we have some really interesting piece of news for our Devgn fans. The National Award winning actor has gone ahead and done his first full-fledged desi-dance number in the movie!

Taking it up as a challenge Ajay Devgn has brought out his dancing shoes and has given the BB ditty his best. Raju Khan, who choreographed the song, says, "There has been a major growth in Ajay Devgn as a dancer. Unlike earlier years where he was very shy, today he's absolutely confident. He is well-versed with dancing and can grasp steps quickly. Also, having worked with him for over a decade now, I am very familiar with his body language. I know what will go down well with his personality and what will not suit his persona. For this particular number with Asin, I gave him steps that would be in perfect sync with his character in the film."

Rohit Shetty is known for always incorporating something out-of-the-box in his song and dance routines and this time around the audience will see a larger than life, colorful mela in the backdrop of the song, which will feature Ajay Devgn flaunting some unique moves and Asin showcasing some latkas and thumkas!

The song, Chalao Na Naino Se Baan Re, is a full-on desi dance number where we see pehelwaan Ajay Devgn wooing his lady love, Asin. Another thing you must know about the song is that it doesn't boast of the regular, run-of-the-mill professional background dancers. Instead we have some very cute and tough looking pehelwaans singing and dancing comically in the background! Together with Himesh Reshamiya's singing and Ajay Devgn's unique stint, the song makes for an out-and-out entertainer!

Court raps Bol Bachchan producers for dud cheques
VICKEY LALWANI, Mumbai Mirror | Jul 1, 2012, 12.00AM IST

One of the leading production houses in Bollywood is in serious legal and financial muddle. Ashtavinayak, the producers of money churners such as Jab We Met and the Golmaal franchise were dragged to court by financer Raju Shah after they failed to clear his dues of Rs 41 crore and several cheques were dishonoured.

On Friday the Bombay High Court pronounced the company a 'defaulter,' and directed Ashtavinayak to disclose all its agreements signed for Bol Bachchan. According to the court order (copy with this newspaper), Shah is also entitled to Ashtavinayak's earnings from Bol Bachchan and its various rights, since their cheques to him have bounced. Besides, the company has been barred from selling its shares of five subsidiary companies, till Shah's dues are cleared. If that was not enough, Shah is now moving court that Ashtavinayak's other assets including properties and film copyrights should be attached.

TOI (June 25) broke the story of how the Bol Bachchan imbroglio (we have a copy of the letter from Ashtavinayak to Shah saying all dues would be cleared before Bol Bachchan releases) had landed the company in legal and financial muddle.

Confirming the developments, advocate Rajeev Narula who argued on behalf of Shah told TOI, "Bombay High Court has passed the order, it is dated June 26, 2012." What if Ashtavinayak does not comply? Said Rajeev, "They have no choice."

Speaking to this paper, soon after the Court ruled the verdict in his favour, Shah's son, Yash said: "We fail to understand how can a company which earned so much with the Golmaal franchise and Jab We Met not clear its dues." Shah considers the court ruling as a moral victory. "I am relieved, justice has been done," he said.

When contacted, Rupen Amlani, a senior member from board of Ashtavinayak's directors, refused to comment. However a spokesperson of the company said: "No amount is due and payable to Raju Shah. That is why the court has not stopped the movie (Bol Bachchan)."

Ajay Devgn: Ready to do anything that suits the character
Last updated on: July 2, 2012 14:15 IST

Director Rohit Shetty and actor Ajay Devgn will come together for the eighth time in Bol Bachchan which releases this Friday. The film also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Asin and Prachi Desai.

Forty-three-year-old Devgn plays a wrestler, who is also a zamindar in a small town. He speaks in bad English, which is quite funny, and since people are scared of him nobody corrects him.

Devgn hates to give interviews and his replies are usually brief. But when Sonil Dedhia caught up with him for this interview, he opened up about the film and his two decades in the industry.

After a blockbuster like Singham, more action films were expected from you, but you are back to doing comedy with Bol Bachchan.

This is an action-comedy and my next film, Son of Sardar, too is an action-comedy.

So there is a good dose of action. We are planning another action film after this.

Do we really need a ‘Singham’ sequel?

BollywoodLife7.30 PM IST 07.10.2012

Ajay Devgn will be collaborating again with his blockbuster director Rohit Shetty. But is there any more that they can do with the story of Bajirao?

The celebrations for the success of Bol Bachchan are still on, and Abhishek Bachchan can finally brag about a superhit film after ages. Obviously the success of this film has more to do with his co-star Ajay Devgn and director Rohit Shetty. While we were wondering what made the film work, despite the over-the-top hamming in the garb of acting and brainless comedy, we just heard that Shetty and Devgn will be making a sequel to their blockbuster action film Singham.

Confirming this in a recent interview the gleeful director said, ““One of the reasons I was keen on a Singham sequel is because this film got Ajay and me tremendous respect from the cops and the janata. It has been playing on a certain television channel since August 2011 for 35-40 consecutive weeks. The story of Singham 2 will be original. We found a fresh story for the sequel and that is why we started talking about Part 2. Singham was a remake, but our sequel is not a copy.”

Agreed, Singham made a lot of money for you all and earned brownie points for Devgn too, but aren’t we doing the sequel overkill in Bollywood, Mr Shetty? And what about Chennai Express? Ditching Shahrukh Khan for the ‘Son of Sardar’, are we?

Ajay Devgn’s ‘Son of Sardaar’ offends Sikhs!

BollywoodLife9.30 AM IST 08.21.2012

The film runs into legal trouble for portraying Sikhs in poor light

A Chandigarh-based lawyer has served a legal notice against the makers of Son of Sardaar. The film starring Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha and Sanjay Dutt has run into trouble for its objectionable content.

On hearing this news we reviewed the promo of the film and thought that though the trailer looked slick and funny, certain phrases were used bluntly. Sample this:

Agar duniya mein Ssardar nahi hote toh kya hota? (What would have happened to the world without Sardars?) Sardar na hote to joke kispe banate? (If Sardars did not exist, what would jokes be made about?) Haramzyada isme pyar hain zyada, teri ma di, teri pen di yeh duniya ko humne sikhayi (We Sardars taught the world these abuses).

After hearing this kind of thing in the two-minute-long promo of the film we wonder, how many more such lines will there be in the film itself? In a desperate attempt to glorify the Sikh community and to poke some fun at Sardars, the dialogue/script writer of this movie has gone overboard. While stereotyping is pretty common in Bollywood films, where people are often clubbed under one common umbrella and jokes are cracked about them, it should be take taken into consideration that the filmmakers should not cross limits and hurt sentiments, religious, ethnic or otherwise.

Clearly in this case Ajay Devgn, who is the producer of the film (he’s also the lead actor and the voice behind the questionable promo), can’t run away from his responsibility of cross checking content.

We also hear that Devgn has been given seven days to respond to the notice and make the necessary alterations in the dialogue, post which legal action will be taken against Devgn and people involved in the execution of this film.

Devgn loses Diwali battle

Posted On Wednesday, November 07, 2012 at 11:28:36 AM

Two big budget productions - Yash Chopra’s last directorial Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Ajay Devgn’s Son Of Sardar, both scheduled for a Diwali 2012 release have been embroiled in a war ever since the release dates were announced.

Last week, the battle took a nasty turn when Ajay Devgn Productions, the makers of SOS alleged YRF of unfair trade practices and the Delhi High Court had to intervene.

The Court on Friday, asked the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to ‘expeditiously’ decide the complaint of Ajay Devgn Films Private Limited that its upcoming venture was not getting enough single-screen theatres as Yash Raj Films has "used its dominant" position for better exhibition of the Shah Rukh Khan starer Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

And now, the CCI has absolved Yash Raj of any unfair trade practice.

In a verdict released on Tuesday (of which we have a copy), the CCI proclaimed, “No enterprise can be considered dominant on the basis of big name…the claim of the informant that opposite parties were dominant players in the market ‘film industry in India’ cannot be accepted….The case is therefore fit for closure….” The Yash Raj Films spokesperson, when contacted, chose to maintain a neutral stance on the verdict. “We’ve neither received any notice from the CCI nor any subsequent rulings regarding the same. It would therefore be inappropriate for us to make any comment,” the spokesperson told us.

But others close to the production house were more forthcoming. For instance, an actor close to YRF commented, “There will be a marked polarisation in the industry following this. Actors, actresses and directors close to Devgn will choose to stay away from YRF Films for a while now.”

Meanwhile, Yash Raj scion Aditya Chopra along with friend Karan Johar is busy preparing for the big Jab Tak Hai Jaan premiere. A source close the production house said, “Adi and Karan are personally supervising every detail of the event. One entire studio floor at Yash Raj Studios has been converted to a theatre to screen the film. The guest list is being drawn up.”

Interestingly all the Yash Raj heroines are expected to line up for the event and the question is will Kajol be a part of the do? According to a source, “Ajay is not the kind to stop his wife from choosing her friends and standing by them. So yes, Kajol who was the leading lady of one of YRF’s most successful films (Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge) should be there.”

JTHJ-SOS row: Ajay loses round one, appeals

Bollywood's shocker of a case - an A-list actor taking the legal route to accuse an A-list production house of unfair, monopolistic business practices over a Diwali release - has been decided. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) passed an order in Delhi on Monday night deciding that the practices of Yash Raj Films that were described as unfair and monopolistic by Ajay Devgn Ffilms, were not violative of sections 3 and 4 of the Competition Act.

What does that mean? Round one goes to YRF. Ajay Devgn Ffilms had filed a case with the CCI, alleging that YRF had used their dominant position in the market to unfairly corner a large number of single screens for JTHJ, leaving few for SOS. At the time of the release of Ek Tha Tiger, YRF had, in return for supplying ETT, made many single screen theatres sign an agreement that they would only screen JTHJ during Diwali.

But in their order on November 5, the CCI stated they didn't think this was monopolistic. These are their arguments: They didn't see how this causes "appreciable adverse effect on Competition in India". It doesn't restrict the entry of new players into the market, it doesn't drive any existing player out of the market, it does not deprive the ultimate consumers, the viewers, of any benefits. The order says single screen theatres took a business decision by signing the agreement - they knew there were going to be other films releasing during Diwali, and they were free not to sign.

It doesn't prevent SOS from being screened. Multiplexes can screen it, as can those single screens which did not sign the agreement. Plus, SOS's release can be postponed or could have been advanced if there were concerns that it would not find enough screens.

The order also says that the 'market' "cannot be restricted to a particular period like Eid or Diwali" and the market "has to be considered a market available throughout the year". It says there is no adverse effect on the 'market' if big films choose to release only in the festive season - if there is such a situation, theatre owners are free to pick one or book their theatres in advance.

The order says that Ajay Devgn Films could not substantiate how YRF is a 'dominant' player. "No enterprise can be considered dominant on the basis of a big name," the order said.

Yash Raj films told TOI that they would comment on the verdict only after getting a copy of the ruling. Ajay's spokesperson said, "We are shocked by the rejection of our legitimate case. We have approached the Appellate Tribunal against the order."
